It\u2019s a cheat code in many Konami games, where the cheat is executed with a sequence of key presses on the keyboard. All you need is a Custom HTML Tag which fires on All Pages. The first line defines a bunch of utility variables we\u2019ll need later on. The <code>konamiCode<\/code> variable is a String with the sequence of keys required to execute the easter egg. The key codes and their respective keys are: 38 &#8211; up arrow, 40 &#8211; down arrow, 37 &#8211; left arrow, 39 &#8211; right arrow, 66 &#8211; B key, 65 &#8211; A key.<\/p>\n<p>The third line declares the <code>keyPresses<\/code> Array, whose job is to keep a record of all keys pressed on the page.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\"><span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> checkKonami = <span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>(e) {\n  keyPresses.push(e.keyCode);\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">if<\/span> (keyPresses.slice(keyPresses.length-<span style=\"color:#099\">10<\/span>).join() === konamiCode) {\n    runKonami();\n  }\n};\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <code>checkKonami<\/code> function is the callback for the \u2018keyup\u2019 event (see below). In essence, it\u2019s called every time a key press is registered on the page. It takes the event object as a parameter (e).<\/p>\n<p>The first line, <code>keyPresses.push(e.keyCode);<\/code>, pushes the key code for the registered key press into the <code>keyPresses<\/code> Array. The next three lines are an if-block, where the <em>last 10 key codes<\/em> are evaluated. These are joined into a comma-separated String object, and then compared with the sequence of key codes in the <code>konamiCode<\/code> String. If these two match, that is if the last ten key presses have the same codes in the same sequence as the <code>konamiCode<\/code> String, the function <code>runKonami<\/code> is called.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\"><span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> runKonami = <span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>() {\n  els = <span style=\"color:#0aa\">document<\/span>.getElementsByTagName(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'h2'<\/span>);\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">for<\/span> (i = <span style=\"color:#099\">0<\/span>, len = els.length; i '').reverse().join(<span style=\"color:#a50\">''<\/span>);\n  }\n};\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the <code>runKonami<\/code> function you can run whatever code you want to when the Konami code is correctly registered on the website. In my example, I take the text content of every single H2 element on the page, and I reverse the character order.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\"><span style=\"color:#0aa\">document<\/span>.addEventListener(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'keyup'<\/span>, checkKonami);\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>The final line of JavaScript adds the event listener for the \u2018keyup\u2019 event, and denotes <code>checkKonami<\/code> as the callback to be invoked each time such an event is registered.<\/p>\n<p>This was hopefully a fun example of how to add a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/custom-event-listeners-gtm\/\">custom event listener<\/a> on the site, and how to manipulate the DOM in a Custom HTML Tag.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You\u2019ve probably heard of the Konami Code.
