The reason this should be a priority is because the UI isn\u2019t perfect. They have many Event tags which only differ by the <em>Event<\/em> that triggers them and\/or by the tag fields of <em>Event Category \/ Action \/ Label \/ Value<\/em>. There\u2019s an easy way to reduce redundancy here. It\u2019s the Generic Event Tag (you guessed it!).<\/p>\n<p>To set it up, you need the following ingredients:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>One Universal Analytics Tag<\/strong>, Event tag type<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Four Data Layer Variables<\/strong>, each for one of the tag fields<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>One Trigger<\/strong>, Custom Event type<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So create the Data Layer Variables first. You need one for each of the most-used Google Analytics Event fields. If you never use Event Value, you can leave it out, and if you use Non-Interaction a lot, you can create a Variable for it, too.<\/p>\n<p>The Data Layer Variables have the following composition:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 344 \/ 470;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/01\/dlv-event-category.jpg\" title=\"Data Layer Variable - Event Category\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"470\" width=\"344\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/01\/dlv-event-category.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Data Layer Variable - Event Category\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>So change the fields for Variable Name (the name you\u2019ll use in the Tag fields) and Data Layer Variable Name accordingly. I chose the following Data Layer Variable Names:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><code>eventCategory<\/code> &#8211; for Event Category value<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><code>eventAction<\/code> &#8211; for Event Action value<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><code>eventLabel<\/code> &#8211; for Event Label value<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><code>eventValue<\/code> &#8211; for Event Value value (value value, eh\u2026)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can choose other names of course, if you wish. Doesn\u2019t make a difference.<\/p>\n<p>Next, you\u2019ll need the Trigger. I\u2019ve chosen <strong>GAEvent<\/strong> as the Event name to match, but you can, again, choose whatever you wish. This is what the Trigger should look like:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 476 \/ 470;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/01\/event-gaevent.jpg\" title=\"Event - GAEvent\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"470\" width=\"476\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/01\/event-gaevent.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Event - GAEvent\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Nothing too complicated, right?<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we\u2019ll need the tag. When you create the tag, you need to add the Trigger you just created in Step 3 of the tag creation process (<em>What triggers this tag to fire?<\/em>). Then, you need to add the Variables you created earlier in their respective fields. Here\u2019s what my Tag looks like:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 471 \/ 940;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/01\/tag-generic-event.jpg\" title=\"Generic Event Tag\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"940\" width=\"471\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/01\/tag-generic-event.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Generic Event Tag\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>As you can see, it\u2019s just a simple case of adding the Variables to their designated fields, and making sure that the Tag fires whenever the <strong>GAEvent<\/strong> value is pushed into <code>dataLayer<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you operate this tag with the following command:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\">dataLayer.push({\n  <span style=\"color:#a50\">'event'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'GAEvent'<\/span>,\n  <span style=\"color:#a50\">'eventCategory'<\/span> : value_for_Event_Category,\n  <span style=\"color:#a50\">'eventAction'<\/span> : value_for_Event_Action,\n  <span style=\"color:#a50\">'eventLabel'<\/span> : value_for_Event_Label,\n  <span style=\"color:#a50\">'eventValue'<\/span> : value_for_Event_Value\n});\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>So whenever this code is executed, the Generic Event Tag is fired with the values you added to the <code>dataLayer.push()<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a tip, though. Because Data Layer Variables are linked together with GTM\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/google-tag-manager-data-model\/\">data model<\/a>, it\u2019s a good practice to always push the <em>undefined<\/em> value with any of the \u2018eventXXXXX\u2019 fields that you do not use. Otherwise it\u2019s possible that the Tag uses some older value you pushed earlier on the page, and you\u2019ll have weird-looking events.<\/p>\n<p>So, for example, if I want to send an Event to GA which only uses the Event Category and Event Action fields, the <code>push()<\/code> would look like this:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\">dataLayer.push({\n  <span style=\"color:#a50\">'event'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'GAEvent'<\/span>,\n  <span style=\"color:#a50\">'eventCategory'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'Form Submit'<\/span>,\n  <span style=\"color:#a50\">'eventAction'<\/span> : {{url path}},\n  <span style=\"color:#a50\">'eventLabel'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#00a\">undefined<\/span>,\n  <span style=\"color:#a50\">'eventValue'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#00a\">undefined<\/span>\n});\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>This will ensure that any values <code>eventLabel<\/code> and <code>eventValue<\/code> might have had in the data model are erased and will not interfere with your Tag.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With Google Tag Manager, there are a million different ways to make your tagging setup leaner and more flexible.
