FarmWise<\/a> CEO Tjarko Leifer is optimistic as ever about robotics and automation technology in agriculture, despite this week\u2019s announcement that his company is restructuring and will start winding down operations.<\/p>\n

Speaking to AgFunderNews<\/em> this week, Leifer cited \u201cmacro economics affecting farmers\u2019 decision-making processes\u201d and the drop in venture capital investment as the major reason for the restructuring.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe resources we have on board, the velocity we have from a sales standpoint, given those macro pieces, just weren\u2019t going to allow us, in our current configuration, to get from where we are to being a profitable enterprise,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope more to announce more soon about not just the technology but Vulcan living on in the market.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ensuring \u2018continuity for customers\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Founded in 2016, FarmWise evolved its tech over the years from a self-propelled weeding robot<\/a> (the Titan) to an intra-row weeder and precision cultivator (the Vulcan) that uses AI, computer vision and robotics to identify and remove weeds. It has raised a total of $65 million from the likes of Fall Line Capital, Alphabet VC arm GV, and Taylor Farms, among others.<\/p>\n

The company will wind down operations \u201cin due course,\u201d said Leifer.<\/p>\n

He gave no further details on the specific timeline for that, instead saying that FarmWise is focused on ensuring \u201ccontinuity for customers\u201d right now. The company still supports its existing customers and will continue to do so, he added.<\/p>\n

His hope is that the fate of FarmWise won\u2019t necessarily be the fate of similar companies. On this point, Leifer was emphatic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the unfortunate reality of a moment in time where customers are facing a lot of headwinds,\u201d he said, referring to those previously referenced macro trends. \u201cCompanies like John Deere are down, and they\u2019ve got the kind of financial resources to weather [the current economic climate]. Startups have to be good and lucky, or at least not unlucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the whole, Leifer says. he\u2019s \u201cvery bullish\u201d about precision tech and automation in ag, not just for the Vulcan but \u201cfor the segment in general.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m hopeful that the coverage of us and what\u2019s going on with our situation doesn\u2019t end up being part of the downdraft for pessimism that exists in the industry right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Bringing technology to agriculture is essential\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n

There\u2019s certainly a need for machines that can address agriculture\u2019s ongoing labor challenges<\/a> that are here to stay for the long term.<\/p>\n

Weeding<\/a>, in particular, is a popular task to automate right now, with developments driven by the aforementioned labor challenges as well as herbicide resistance and chemicals being taken off the market.<\/p>\n

In the US, weeds decrease crop yields by an annual average cost of $33 billion, according to the United States Department of Agriculture<\/a>. Weed-control activities cost around $6 billion annually and typically include now-controversial herbicides.<\/p>\n

Leifer echoed all of this and suggested that while FarmWise the company may be winding down, it\u2019s technology is commercially ready.<\/p>\n

\u201cBringing technology to agriculture is just essential. You have dirty, dangerous jobs that people in the next generation don\u2019t want to fill, labor availability and cost of labor is sort of an existential risk. On like the chemistry side, we have herbicide resistance, we have chemicals being taken off the market. We have consumer preferences being against [chemical herbicides].\u201d<\/p>\n

FarmWise sees ag robotics and intelligent machinery as \u201ca key pillar of innovation\u201d that will allow farmers to operate and thrive in a world where all of those force are at work, he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe technology works. We save our customers a lot of money, and we\u2019re confident that the technology can scale over time and be reliable.
