Also, \u201ctracking file downloads\u201d means sending Events to Google Analytics, so this is a GA for GTM guide as well.<\/p>\n<p>                <span class=\"simmer\"><br \/>\n  <span class=\"close\">X<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n    <span class=\"fa fa-md fa-bell\"\/><br \/>\n    <strong>The Simmer Newsletter<\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Subscribe to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/newsletter\/\">Simmer newsletter<\/a> to get the latest news and content from Simo Ahava into your email inbox!\n  <\/p>\n<p>  <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tip-15-set-up-file-download-tracking-in-gtm\">Tip 15: Set up file download tracking in GTM<\/h2>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1519 \/ 848;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/02\/track-file-downloads.jpg\" title=\"Track File Downloads in GTM V2\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"848\" width=\"1519\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/02\/track-file-downloads.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Track File Downloads in GTM V2\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Since we\u2019re using Google Analytics as the tracking platform, we\u2019ll need the following ingredients to make this setup work:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Event Tag<\/strong> &#8211; which fires when a downloadable file link is clicked, and sends the Event to Google Analytics<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Auto-Event Variable for click URL path<\/strong> &#8211; to capture the URL path of the clicked link<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Event Trigger<\/strong> &#8211; which uses the Link Click trigger type and checks if URL path contains any of the extensions you want to track<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So start with the Auto-Event Variable, and follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Create new Variable of type Auto-Event Variable<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Name it <strong>Click URL Path<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Choose <strong>Element URL<\/strong> as the Variable type<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Choose <strong>Path<\/strong> as the Component Type<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I like this method, since using the Component Type \u201cPath\u201d strips the URL so that only the URI path remains. This means that query parameters, fragments, hostnames, protocols, and ports are all excluded from the string, leaving a much cleaner output.<\/p>\n<p>For the Trigger, you need to create a Link Click trigger, where the Click URL Path is matched against a regular expression of all the file extensions you want to monitor. If the whole concept of Link Click tracking is unfamiliar to you, remember to check my guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/auto-event-tracking-gtm-2-0\/\">auto-event tracking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Create a new Trigger, and choose Click as the Event Type<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Name it <strong>Event &#8211; Link Click on downloadable<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Choose <strong>Link Click<\/strong> as the Trigger Type<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Select Wait for Tags and Check Validation if you wish<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>If you selected either Wait for Tags or Check Validation, choose <strong>Page URL matches RegEx .<\/strong>* as a filter in the \u201cEnable When\u201d step of the Link Click Trigger creation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>For \u201cFire On\u201d, add the following condition: <strong>Click URL Path matches RegEx .(ext1|ext2|ext3)$<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It should look like this:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 720 \/ 405;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/02\/trigger-link-click-downloadable.jpg\" title=\"Trigger for Link Click on Downloadable asset\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"405\" width=\"720\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/02\/trigger-link-click-downloadable.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Trigger for Link Click on Downloadable asset\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Couple of things to note here. First, if you select either \u201cWait for Tags\u201d or \u201cCheck Validation\u201d in the Link Click Trigger settings, you will have an extra step called \u201cEnable When\u201d. This step is for when GTM should listen for link clicks, so I suggest you put <strong>Page URL matches RegEx .<\/strong>* as the only condition.<\/p>\n<p>Second, you will need to add the file extensions you want to track in the \u201cFire On\u201d condition. For example, if I want to track all PDF, XLSX, PNG, and DOCX downloads on my site, the regular expression would look like this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>.(pdf|xlsx|png|docx)$<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This would match any Click URL Path which ends in <strong>.pdf, .xlsx, .png,<\/strong> or <strong>.docx<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If your site has file extensions in capital letters (PNG, XLSX), you\u2019ll need to change the operator from <strong>matches RegEx<\/strong> to <strong>matches RegEx (ignore case)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you\u2019ll need the Tag itself. It\u2019s just your run-of-the-mill Event Tag, and you need to attach the Trigger you just created to it.<\/p>\n<p>Feel free to be creative with what you add as the Event fields. I\u2019ve used a simple <strong>Click URL<\/strong> Variable to get the entire URL of the clicked link, but you could do some macro magic and return just the filename or the file extension (see my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/macro-magic-google-tag-manager\/\">macro magic<\/a> article for instructions).<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this #GTMtips post, we\u2019ll go over a simple method for tracking file downloads in Google Tag Manager, specifically the new, V2 interface.
