At the beginning of next week, approximately six of my work colleagues
\nwill travel across to the Rhineland<\/b> city of Cologne<\/b>, in order to participate in
\nthe 2025 International Dental Show (IDS).<\/b> The IDS<\/b>, which occurs biennially, is generally regarded as the world’s largest dental show. Although this status might now
\nbe challenged by other similar dental exhibitions held in the emerging markets
\nof the Middle <\/b>and the Far East. (Dubai & Singapore).<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

My company has
\nmaintained a presence at the IDS<\/b> since before I became an employee in 2006<\/b>, and
\nalthough the event requires considerable time, money and effort, the rewards
\nassociated with it are well worth it. Chief amongst the rewards, my employer
\nhas become the largest manufacturer of dental materials in the United Kingdom.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The dental show also provides opportunities to acquire new
\ncustomers and distributors for our products, as well as to discover innovative
\nideas in the field of dentistry. Additionally, it offers a chance to connect
\nwith customers from around the globe, with in-person interactions being
\nconsidered effective. The COVID-19<\/b> pandemic and associated lock-downs have
\ndemonstrated that digital platforms, such as Zoom<\/b>, are no substitute
\nface-to-face interactions. Sometimes these meetings extend into evening
\ngatherings. A meal or a few beers with a prospective customer or an existing
\nclient can be highly beneficial, although it is difficult to quantify the value
\nof such interactions. Despite the assertions made by proponents of virtual
\nmeetings, face-to-face interactions remain unparalleled. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Over the past 15 years, <\/b>I have written numerous posts about
\nthese biennial
\nvisits to IDS<\/b>, and with <\/span><\/span>eight visits to Cologne, <\/b>six of which
\nwere for business purposes, under my belt, I have developed a considerable affection
\nfor this Rhineland<\/b> city. I have also become quite proficient in navigating my
\nway around Cologne<\/b> and can readily identify some of the finest for both eating and
\ndrinking. When I first joined the company, the travel plan for IDS<\/b> involved driving
\nacross to Cologne<\/b> in a hired mini bus, loaded with promotional materials. Our
\nroute from Kent<\/b> took us through the Channel Tunnel,<\/b> across Northern France <\/b>and
\nBelgium<\/b>, and then into the Germany.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

In 2017<\/b>, the company switched to rail
\ntravel, and by sending samples and product literature ahead of time, it
\nbecame possible to take a 30-minute drive from the factory to Ebbsfleet,<\/b> board
\na Brussels-bound Eurostar service.<\/b> At Brussels,<\/b> we would then take a Deutsche
\nBahn ICE <\/b>train or a Thalys<\/b> service to Cologne. <\/b>After the pandemic the journey
\nbecame longer, and more complicated than previously, because Eurostar<\/b> has
\nrefused to reopen the two international, Kentish<\/b> stations at Ebbsfleet
\n<\/b>and Ashford<\/b>. Protests from Kent<\/b> based businesses, trade bodies and
\nresidents continue to fall on deaf ears \u2013 time perhaps to strip Eurostar<\/b> of its
\nfranchise, and let a different operator have a go? <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Since I first went to Cologne,<\/b> the company has used the
\nsame hotel, the Appartel am Dom,<\/b> a friendly family run establishment close to
\nthe Haupt Bahnhof, <\/b>and within 25 minutes walking distance of K\u00f6ln Messe,<\/b> the
\nvast agglomeration of exhibition halls on the other side of the river Rhine<\/b>.
\nGetting to it on foot involves a walk across the Hohenzollern Bridge,<\/b> a similar
\nstructure to the Hungerford Bridge <\/b>which runs across the River Thames<\/b> to Charing
\nCross <\/b>station from the South Bank.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

In recent years, as I have grown older and my walking pace has slowed, I have opted to take the S-Bahn<\/b> train across the Rhine<\/b>
\nfrom Haupt Bahnhof <\/b>to K\u00f6ln Messe \u2013 Deutz<\/b>, on the opposite side of the river.
\nThis journey is straightforward and simple, and it is also free, as one’s dental show exhibition pass is valid on these trains. The service is particularly
\nuseful when time is limited or during bad weather. Some colleagues have found
\nout the hard way, just how exposed that crossing is when it rains. Arriving at
\nthe exhibition soaked isn’t the best start to a long day, and looking like a
\ndrowned rat doesn’t create a good impression either!\u00a0
<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Back in 2023, <\/b>I wrote an article titled “Cologne for
\nthe Final Time?”<\/i><\/b> <\/a>which indeed turned out to be my last visit. Prior to Christmas,<\/b> I
\nwas asked by our General Manager <\/b>if I wanted to attend the\u00a0 upcoming 2025 <\/b>event, but I declined, albeit with
\nmixed emotions. Although the company offered the option of attending for
\nlimited hours, I realised this wouldn’t be feasible. One of the primary
\nresponsibilities of staff members at such events is to ensure that someone is
\nalways present at the stand. This is crucial because\u00a0 key members of our team, such
\nas the Sales Manager<\/b> and General Manager,<\/b> are often either away, visiting other
\ncompanies, meeting prospective clients, or hosting meetings at our stand. While
\nI possess a fair amount of product knowledge, I am not equipped to provide
\ninformation on pricing, distribution deals, etc. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

There would then be a return journey across the river Rhine<\/b>,
\nor in my case, a train trip, back to the hotel. An opportunity to freshen up
\nand change into something casual would follow before heading back into the city
\ncentre for a meal at a prearranged restaurant or bar. Consequently, there is
\nvery little personal free time. However, during my last visit, I managed to
\ncheck off a couple of K\u00f6lsch <\/b>outlets from my list. This was an exception rather
\nthan the norm.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Given these circumstances, I decided it would be best not to
\nattend, as I would likely find myself standing at the booth until the
\nexhibition closed at 6 pm.<\/b> Looking back, I see that I posted following IDS 2023<\/b>,<\/a><\/u> that having crossed those final two Cologne \u201cessentials\u201d<\/i><\/b> off from my
\nlist, there is no compelling reason for a further visit to the city. I closed the article with the words, “I may feel
\ndifferent in a couple of years\u2019 time, but at this current moment, I’m not sure
\nwhether I want to do the full week, IDS experience again.”<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

So, as my colleagues depart for Germany<\/b> on Monday <\/b>morning, I am
\nnot overly disappointed that I will not be accompanying them. Instead, I would
\nlike to reflect on some of the notable establishments in Cologne, <\/b>where one can
\nenjoy quality food, freely flowing beer, engaging conversation, and a relaxing
