Without further ado, allow me to introduce a new Trigger operator &#8211; the <strong>matches CSS selector<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 748 \/ 448;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/02\/trigger-selector.jpg\" title=\"Matches css selector\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"448\" width=\"748\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/02\/trigger-selector.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Matches css selector\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s <em>modus operandi<\/em> is quite simple. You create a Trigger condition, where an <strong>HTML element<\/strong> is checked against a CSS selector. Traditionally, CSS selectors have been used to modify styles of the given elements. Nowadays, we can actually use them to target HTML elements for other purposes as well, especially since frameworks such as jQuery, which target elements using CSS selectors, have become ubiquitous. There are also the vanilla JavaScript <code>querySelector()<\/code>, <code>querySelectorAll()<\/code> and <code>matches()<\/code> DOM methods that allow you to pick elements based on CSS selectors.<\/p>\n<p>For a nice list of currently supported CSS3 selectors, check out the W3Schools guide: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3schools.com\/cssref\/css_selectors.asp\">CSS Selector Reference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some CSS selectors you might find very useful. These are all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/auto-event-tracking-gtm-2-0\/\">auto-event tracking<\/a> related, because the possibilities of auto-event tracking just opened up in a completely new way with the introduction of this new Trigger operator.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 682 \/ 130;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/02\/example-trigger.jpg\" title=\"Trigger example\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"130\" width=\"682\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/02\/example-trigger.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Trigger example\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Instead of targeting <strong>Click ID<\/strong> or <strong>Form Class<\/strong>, you must now always provide an HTML element to the Trigger condition. The most significant asset is, by far, the chance to see ancestral relationships. You can now check if the element that was clicked or submitted is the child or direct descendant of any given element. What an ingenious way to fire tags only on clicks under the main navigation, for example!<\/p>\n<p>Remember that you can add multiple selectors just as with CSS by using a comma between the selectors:<\/p>\n<p>Click Element &#8211; <strong>matches CSS selector<\/strong> &#8211; video,video *<\/p>\n<p>This condition would match clicks on a HTML5 <code><video\/><\/code> element or any of its descendants.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re limited by CSS3, mainly. You can\u2019t do descendant checks, so you can\u2019t have a CSS selector which only matches an element if it has a specific element as its child. You\u2019ll still need JavaScript for this, unfortunately.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, <a href=\"http:\/\/dev.w3.org\/csswg\/selectors-4\/\">CSS4<\/a> is already pretty far in its draft stages. It brings a slew of amazing new features, which will only make this CSS selector Trigger even more powerful.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"technical-details\">Technical details<\/h2>\n<p>Just to wrap this post up, here\u2019s a technical description of the new operator (thanks Brian Kuhn!). There\u2019s nothing revolutionary about it, proving how GTM still leverages well-founded practices rather than inventing the wheel again each time.<\/p>\n<p>The operator uses the <code>matches()<\/code> method with variations depending on which browser you\u2019re using. The <code>matches()<\/code> method lets you check if a given element matches against a CSS selector:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\">element.matches(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'.thisclass'<\/span>);\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>The code above would evaluate to <strong>true<\/strong> if the given element has the class \u201cthisclass\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><code>matches()<\/code> isn\u2019t supported by all browsers, and e.g. Internet Explorer only supports it at version 9.0.
