Thousands of residents and
\nbusinesses in the Perth Hills are still without power, more than 17 hours after
\na freak storm tore through the area on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The storm, which brought strong
\nwind, hail and heavy rainfall to the area, uprooted trees and ripped roofs from
\nhomes hit the area around 6pm Wednesday and was described by those who saw it
\nas a \u2018mini tornado\u2019 lasting several minutes. Emergency crews received over 60
\ncalls for assistance in the hours that followed.<\/p>\n
Residents in Parkville, Mount
\nHelena, Mundaring, Stoneville, Sawyers Valley and Gigegannup remain the most
\naffected areas for power outages, with an estimated restorations time across
\nthe network of 8pm Thursday at the earliest.<\/p>\n
Western Power said 12,200 homes
\nin total had lost power, with destructive winds damaging equipment and bringing
\ndown powerlines.<\/p>\n
Wind gusts associated with storms
\nin the region reached 70 to 90km\/h, but it is likely that localised wind gusts
\nwere stronger, the Bureau of Meteorology reported.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese thunderstorms were driven
\nby a combination of high daytime temperatures, reaching the mid-to-high 30s,
\nand lingering tropical moisture left behind by the remnants of Ex-Tropical
\nCyclone Zelia,\u201d the agency said.<\/p>\n
Amaroo Retreat, in Mount Helena,
\nwas one business impacted by the storm. Owner Kirstin Westerman told Radio 6PR
\nthe weather had changed rapidly.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think best described as a
\ntornado, it just came on out of the blue, went from blue sky to black, intense
\nwind with hail, and the devastation was catastrophic for us unfortunately and
\nour surrounding neighbours,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur restaurant and kitchen, two
\nchalets, our shed, a pool, our water tank has been flattened. We have
\nsignificant damage and will be closed for a considerable amount of time I
\nthink.\u201d<\/p>\n
Westerman said she had run up to
\nthe restaurant from her home on the property as the storm hit to check on the
\nguests who had been staying, entering the building right as a tree crashed down
\nonto it.<\/p>\n
She said it was \u201cextremely lucky\u201d
\nno one was hurt.<\/p>\n
Possum Valley Animal Sanctuary
\nowner Mark Hayman said they had lost a number of fences, with trees falling
\nacross them, and some water tanks had been destroyed.<\/b><\/p>\n
None of the 320 animals living at
\nthe property were harmed.<\/b><\/p>\n
\u201cWe have quite a dedicated team
\nof volunteers so \u2026 we had eight or so that came up just to help us do some
\nassessment and make sure everybody was secure back in their shelters and
\npaddocks and quickly do some repairs to some fences and clear some trees off
\nthe main road so people could get in and out,\u201d he said.<\/b><\/p>\n
\u201cWe were able to get some sleep
\nlast night, comfortable knowing that everybody was safe and secure.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster
\nJohnathon Howe said residents were faced with significant damage.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe did have reports of tornados
\nand tornado-like damage across the region, so the Bureau staff will be doing a
\nfull assessment today looking at the radar as well as doing a damage assessment
\nto determine whether or not it was a tornado,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe highest wind gust we did see
\nat observation stations were between 80 to 90 kilometres per hour, but it is
\nlikely that in these localised areas those wind speeds were much greater than
\nthat to cause this damage.\u201d<\/p>\n
Department of Fire and Emergency
\nServices metropolitan operations assistant commissioner Danny Mosconi said it
\nwas \u201cquite an unusual event.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMy understanding is these types
\nof events happen about five times a year across the southwest land division,\u201d
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe might not have had the
\nrotation type of movement that a tornado has, but certainly unusual event.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
