That’s what AI chatbots are becoming for many people. From texting to talking in soothing voices, these digital companions are slipping into our daily lives. But what happens when we lean on them too much? A recent study conducted by MIT and OpenAI sheds light on the impacts of different chatbot designs and usage patterns. The findings offer valuable insights for both users and developers of AI technology. Let’s know more about it!

The Experiment

The study was designed to figure out how chatting with AI affects people’s emotions and social lives. It wasn’t just a casual test – it was a carefully planned, four-week experiment with real people and real conversations.

The experiment lasted 28 days – four full weeks. Each participant was randomly assigned one of the three modalities (text, neutral voice, or engaging voice) and one of the three conversation types (open-ended, personal, or non-personal). That made nine possible combos—like text with personal chats or engaging voice with non-personal topics. Random assignment meant no one picked their setup; it was all chance, which helps make the results fair.

Every day, participants logged in and talked to their chatbot. The researchers tracked everything—over 300,000 messages in total. They measured how long people spent chatting (called “daily duration”) since typing and speaking take different amounts of time. Some stuck to the minimum five minutes; others went way longer, up to nearly 28 minutes a day.

Here’s how it worked:

Conceptual framework of the study examining how different interaction modalities and conversation tasks influence user’s psychosocial outcomes over a four-week period. The study explores how user behavior, human perception of AI and model behavior impact psychosocial outcomes including loneliness, socialization with people, emotional dependence on AI, and problematic use of AI.
Source: MIT and OpenAI Research Paper

Who Was Involved?

The researchers gathered 981 adults, a mix of men (48.2%) and women (51.8%), with an average age of about 40. These weren’t random folks off the street—they were people willing to chat with an AI every day for a month. Most had jobs (48.7% full-time), and about half had used a text-based chatbot like ChatGPT before, though few had tried voice versions. This mix gave a broad snapshot of everyday people – not just tech geeks or loners.

What Did They Use?

The AI was a version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT (GPT-4o), tweaked for the experiment. Participants didn’t all get the same chatbot. The researchers split it into three styles, or “modalities,” to see how different ways of interacting might change things:

Text Modality: Just typing, like texting a friend. This was the basic version, the control group.

Neutral Voice Modality: A voice version with a professional, calm tone—like a polite customer service rep.

Engaging Voice Modality: A livelier voice, more emotional and expressive, like a chatty buddy.

For the voice modes, they used two options – Ember (male-sounding) or Sol (female-sounding) assigned randomly. The voices weren’t just about sound; custom instructions made the neutral one formal and the engaging one warm and responsive. This let the team test if a chatbot’s “personality” matters.

What Did People Talk About?

The conversations weren’t free-for-all. Participants were given specific tasks to guide their chats, split into three types:

Open-Ended Conversations: They could talk about anything like sports, movies, whatever popped into their heads. This was the control, mimicking how people might naturally use a chatbot.

Personal Conversations: Each day, they got a prompt to share something personal, like “What’s something you’re grateful for?” or “Tell me about a tough moment.” This was meant to mimic a companion chatbot, the kind people turn to for emotional support.

Non-Personal Conversations: Daily prompts about neutral topics, like “How did historical events shape tech?” This was like using a general assistant chatbot for facts or ideas.

What Were They Measuring?

The goal was to see how these chats affected four big feelings or behaviors, called “psychosocial outcomes”:

Loneliness: How isolated or alone people felt, scored from 1 (not at all) to 4 (very much).

Socialization with People: How much they hung out with real humans, scored from 0 (none) to 5 (a lot).

Emotional Dependence on AI: How much they needed the chatbot emotionally, like feeling upset without it, scored from 1 (not at all) to 5 (a lot).

Problematic Use of AI: Unhealthy habits, like obsessing over the chatbot, scored from 1 (not at all) to 5 (a lot).

They checked these at the start (baseline) and end (week 4), with some weekly check-ins. They also asked about things like trust in the AI, age, gender, and habits to see how those shaped the outcomes.

Voice Changes How We Feel

The sound of a voice can do wonders. In the study, people who used voice-based chatbots – whether a calm, neutral tone or a lively, engaging one, felt less lonely than those typing away. It’s not hard to see why. A voice adds warmth, a hint of presence that text can’t match. Those with a neutral voice chatbot scored lower on loneliness and didn’t get as attached to the AI. The engaging voice, with its expressive flair, worked even better – people felt less dependent and less stuck on it. It’s almost like hearing a friendly tone tricks our brains into feeling less alone.

Regression plots showing the final psychosocial outcomes over daily usage duration (minutes) for each
chatbot modality when controlling for the initial values of the psychosocial outcomes measured at the start of the study.
Source: MIT and OpenAI Research Paper

But there’s a flip side. When people spent too much time with these voice bots, the benefits started to slip. The neutral voice, in particular, turned sour with heavy use. Participants ended up socializing less with real people and showed signs of problematic habits, like checking the AI too often. The engaging voice held up better, but even its charm dulled with overuse. It seems a voice can lift us up, until we lean on it too hard. Then it might pull us away from the world instead of connecting us to it.

What We Talk About Matters Too

What you say to a chatbot changes how it affects you. The study split conversations into three lanes: open-ended chats where anything goes, personal talks about things like gratitude or struggles, and non-personal topics like history or tech. The results were surprising. Personal chats made people feel a little lonelier. Sharing deep thoughts might stir up emotions that don’t easily settle. But here’s the upside: those same chats lowered emotional dependence on the AI. It’s as if opening up kept the chatbot at arm’s length—not a crutch, just a sounding board.

Non-personal chats told a different story. Talking about random facts or ideas didn’t spark loneliness, but it hooked heavy users harder. The more they chatted about safe, surface-level stuff, the more they relied on the AI. Open-ended talks landed in the middle, people spent the most time on them, averaging six minutes a day, and outcomes varied. It’s fascinating how the topic can nudge us closer to or further from the AI. Personal talks might stir the soul, while small talk risks becoming a habit. What we choose to share or hide seems to shape the bond.

Too Much Time with AI Can Backfire

Time is a big player here. The study tracked how long people spent with the chatbot each day. On average, it was about five minutes, barely a coffee break. But the range was wild. Some dipped in for a minute, others lingered for nearly half an hour. The pattern was clear: more time meant more trouble. Loneliness crept up as daily use grew. Socializing with real people took a hit too, those long chats with AI left less room for friends or family. Emotional dependence climbed, and so did problematic use, like feeling antsy without the AI or checking it compulsively.

Amount of daily time spent (duration) with the chatbot across conditions. At first, it seemed to help. Across all groups, loneliness dropped slightly over the four weeks. But the heavier the use, the more the scales tipped the other way. Voice users started with an edge, less loneliness, less attachment, but even they couldn’t escape the pattern. Too much of a good thing turned sour. It’s a gentle warning: a little AI might lift us, but a lot could weigh us down. Finding that sweet spot feels crucial.

Who We Are Shapes How AI Affects Us

We’re not all wired the same, and that matters. The study dug into how people’s traits influenced their chatbot experience. Those who started out lonely stayed lonely or got worse. If they were already emotionally clingy, the AI didn’t fix that; it often amplified it. Trust played a role too. People who saw the chatbot as reliable and caring ended up lonelier and more dependent by the end. It’s like believing in the AI too much made it harder to let go.

Gender added another layer. Women, after four weeks, socialized less with real people than men did. If the AI’s voice was the opposite gender, like a man hearing a female voice “Sol” or a woman hearing “Ember” loneliness and dependence spiked. Age mattered too. Older participants leaned harder on the AI emotionally, maybe seeking a steady presence. Initial habits set the tone as well. Heavy users from the start saw bigger drops in real-world connection. Our quirks trust, gender, age, even how social we are, color how AI fits into our lives. It’s not just about the tech; it’s about us.

Can Chatbots Be Too Good at Being Human?

The engaging voice bot shone, cutting dependence and misuse with its warm tone. People spent over six minutes daily with it, versus four with text. It felt real, helping those with high dependence most. But a paradox emerged: the more human-like, the more some leaned on it. Attachment-prone users got lonelier with heavy use. The neutral voice backfired worse, isolating heavy users. If AI feels too human, does it fill a void or widen it? The line is thin.

You can download the research paper here.

End Note

This study isn’t just about chatbots…it’s about us. Researchers suggest chatbots could nudge us toward real connections, set chat limits, or handle emotions better. AI mirrors our feelings, which is powerful but risky, echoing us too well might deepen loneliness. More research is needed: longer studies, younger users, mental health impacts. Can chatbots care without crossing lines? It’s about fitting AI into our lives, not fearing or praising it. What do we need from them, a quick chat or a stand-in? Our answers might reveal more about us than our tech.

Hello, I am Nitika, a tech-savvy Content Creator and Marketer.
