\nago this month, the Tennessee General Assembly passed the Butler
\nAct<\/a>, prohibiting public school teachers from teaching evolution. So
\nthis week I\u2019ve AmericanStudied that law and the famous
\ntrial<\/a> it produced, leading up to this weekend post on current attacks
\non educators.]<\/p>\n

On what\u2019s
\nnew about our spate of anti-education attacks, and what\u2019s not.<\/span><\/p>\n

In my
\npost-Valentine\u2019s non-favorites series two years ago, I included <\/span>this post<\/span><\/a> on
\n\u201cNon-Favorite Trends: Attacking Teachers & Librarians.\u201d Such attacks have
\nsadly not dissipated at all since that time\u2014indeed, there seem to be even more
\nof them over those subsequent two years\u2014and so I\u2019d ask you to check out that
\npost if you would and then come on back with a couple further thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Welcome
\nback! I don\u2019t want in any significant way to echo recent voices (most notably a
\nvery frustrating Atlantic<\/i> cover story published after the insurance CEO
\nmurder, to which I will not link here as I think it was as a-historical as anything
\nI\u2019ve read in a while) who have argued that contemporary America is more
\nviolent, or at least more accepting of violence, than in the past\u2014I\u2019m <\/span>with
\nRichard Slotkin<\/span><\/a> when it comes to the foundational presence and role of violence
\nin American history and identity. But I would agree with the author of <\/span>this
\nDailyKos post<\/span><\/a>\u2014our frustrating acceptance of right-wing violence, and indeed the
\nendorsement of it by some of our <\/span>most powerful political figures<\/span><\/a>, is without
\nquestion a deepening and terrifying trend in early 2025. No single day better
\nreflects that trend than January 6th<\/sup>, 2021, but the truth is that institutions
\nlike
\nschools and libraries<\/a> have been threatened more consistently than any other
\npublic spaces, both in the ostensible context of specific events like drag storytimes<\/a>
\nand just because, y\u2019know, they have books and larnin\u2019 and whatnot.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like mass
\nshootings and open carry and all sorts of other corollaries to our ever-more-ubiquitous
\ngun culture, these right-wing threats do seem to have increased dramatically in
\nrecent years. But it\u2019s really important to locate them as part of America\u2019s
\nlongstanding, if not indeed foundational, legacy of attacks on educators and
\neducational institutions from right-wing (and generally white supremacist) domestic
\nterrorists. Up here in New England we\u2019ve got one of the most overt such
\nattacks, the 1835
\ndestruction<\/a> of Canaan, New Hampshire\u2019s groundbreaking, abolitionist and
\nco-educational Noyes
\nAcademy<\/a> for African Americans. While I wouldn\u2019t disagree with folks who
\nwould want to locate those histories as part of America\u2019s overarching and
\nequally foundational streak
\nof anti-intellectualism<\/a>, it doesn\u2019t seem to me that anti-intellectualism
\nalone would be enough to motivate people to physically and violently attack institutions\u2014it
\ntakes the all-too-American marriage of anti-intellectualism with white supremacy
\nto really produce this legacy, in which our own moment remains firmly located. <\/span><\/p>\n
