This tool lets you opt-in to account migration for your <em>legacy<\/em> Google Tag Manager Accounts. That\u2019s the URL for GTM V2. When you enter the site, the Migration Assistant should pop-up immediately. You can choose to launch the assistant there and then, or you can cancel and do this later.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 701 \/ 319;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/03\/migration-assistant-dialog.jpg\" title=\"Launch the opt-in migration\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"319\" width=\"701\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/03\/migration-assistant-dialog.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Launch the opt-in migration\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>If you do choose to cancel, you can launch the Migration Assistant by scrolling down to where the \u201cLegacy Accounts\u201d are listed on the V2 start page. In the title bar for the \u201cLegacy Accounts\u201d is a button that will also launch the migration tool.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 798 \/ 124;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/03\/legacy-accounts-button.jpg\" title=\"Legacy Accounts button\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"124\" width=\"798\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/03\/legacy-accounts-button.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Legacy Accounts button\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>When you do choose to launch the Migration Assistant, all your legacy accounts will be listed. You can select one or many from this list. After selecting the accounts, clicking <strong>Migrate<\/strong> will start the migration process.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 589 \/ 470;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/03\/account-selection.jpg\" title=\"Account selection for migration\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"470\" width=\"589\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/03\/account-selection.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Account selection for migration\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>The migration process is designed to be completely transparent<\/strong>. You will not need to edit the container snippet on the page template, nor will you need to republish the container version.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 689 \/ 286;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/03\/migrations-submitted.jpg\" title=\"Migrations submitted\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"286\" width=\"689\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/03\/migrations-submitted.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Migrations submitted\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>It will take some hours for the migration(s) to complete, so be patient.<\/p>\n<p>Once the migration is done, you can start using the V2 features in your container. Here are two things you might want to get acquainted with.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-trigger-based-auto-event-tracking\">1. Trigger-based Auto-Event Tracking<\/h3>\n<p>If you had setup auto-event tracking in your legacy container, you\u2019ll have used the <em>Event Listener<\/em> Tag templates. However, in V2, auto-event tracking is now Trigger-based, and does not require a separate tag setup anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at my guide for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/auto-event-tracking-gtm-2-0\/\">auto-event tracking in GTM V2<\/a>. What you\u2019ll need to do is take the conditions from your old \u201cFiring rules\u201d (now converted to custom Triggers), and use them in the dedicated auto-event Trigger types: e.g. Click, Link Click, and Form Submit.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you had a Firing Rule that looked like:<\/p>\n<p><strong>{{event}} equals gtm.formSubmit<br \/>{{element id}} equals contactForm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In V2, you would create a Form Submit Trigger, and in its \u201cFire When\u201d settings, you would add the condition:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Form ID equals contactForm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This does require that you activate the built-in Form ID variable as well (see below).<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, follow the guide, and you\u2019ll have a better idea of what you need to.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-built-in-variables\">2. Built-in variables<\/h3>\n<p>In V2, the most common variables you\u2019ll need are available as built-in variables. You can read more about them in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/variable-guide-google-tag-manager\/\">Variable Guide for GTM V2<\/a>. I suggest you use these, as they will keep the container size down, and activating them is as simple as checking a box in the Variables screen.<\/p>\n<p>When you migrate from V1, you\u2019ll have a bunch of pre-defined legacy variables such as <strong>{{url}}<\/strong>, <strong>{{url path}}<\/strong>, <strong>{{element url}}<\/strong>, etc. These all have equivalent built-in variables, so one of the things you might want to do is activate the respective built-in variables, and then modify your Tags and Variables to use these instead.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a pretty sweet way to replace your user-defined variables with their respective Built-in Variables, courtesy of Brian Kuhn:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Make sure the Built-in Variable has been <strong>deactivated<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Rename the user-named variable (e.g. <strong>{{url}}<\/strong>) to its respective Built-in Variable (e.g. <strong>Page URL<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Reactivate the Built-in Variable, and choose <strong>Overwrite<\/strong> in the pop-up that\u2019s displayed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This will update all your Tags, Variables, and Triggers to use the Built-in Variable instead.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 612 \/ 290;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/03\/naming-conflict.jpg\" title=\"Built-in Variable naming conflict\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"290\" width=\"612\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/03\/naming-conflict.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Built-in Variable naming conflict\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Do note that this isn\u2019t <em>required<\/em>, but it\u2019s a good idea to migrate completely to V2, so that you can leverage the new features as much as possible.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On March 30th, right on (the latest) schedule, the Migration Assistant tool was published for Google Tag Manager V2.
