Ernie Yarbrough, R-Trinity, the bill would require Alabama law enforcement to work more closely with federal immigration authorities and maintain information about individuals\u2019 immigration status \u201cas reasonably needed for public safety purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know the person who put this bill, he wants to fix a lot of problems. I understand. Like I said, I\u2019m a mother who worries about my daughter\u2019s safety. I want you to remember about HB56,\u201d the speaker implored the committee members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was here,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd many, many of my friends left because they were afraid. Many stayed here to fight. A lot of people, we stay here and fight, but many couldn\u2019t stay because they were afraid and they left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Passed by the state legislature in 2011, <a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/AL\/bill\/HB56\/2011\">HB56<\/a> mandated that police officers verified immigration status during traffic stops, placed significant restrictions on employing undocumented immigrants, and made \u201charboring\u201d unauthorized aliens a crime. Large parts of the bill, though, were eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ndal\/pr\/alabamas-immigration-law-permanently-blocked-justice-department-lawsuit\">shot down in the courts<\/a> due to being found unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>The House Judiciary Committee also heard speakers argue for and against <a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/AL\/text\/HB8\/2025\">HB8<\/a>, a bill that would expand the ABC Board\u2019s ability to regulate vaping devices and other \u201calternative nicotine products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HB8\u2019s sponsor in the House, Rep. Barbara Drummond, D-Mobile, highlighted that the bill is \u201cidentical to what we had in session that passed out of this committee on last session and got on the Senate\u2019s floor,\u201d referring to <a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/AL\/bill\/HB65\/2024\">HB65<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Several representatives of vaping trade organizations said the bill would make it harder for people to quit smoking traditional cigarettes and that it unfairly targeted their industry.<\/p>\n<p>Molly Cole of the Alabama Hemp and Vape Association said passing the bill before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2024\/23-1038\"><em>FDA v. Wages and White Lion Investments<\/em><\/a> is decided would be premature. Currently before the Supreme Court, the case concerns the FDA\u2019s decision to strengthen regulations on flavored vaping products.<\/p>\n<p>Another critic with the AHVA, Amy Albers, claimed that HB8 is \u201cnot a public health bill, it is a corporate protection bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On behalf of the Vapor Technology Association, one speaker singled out a clause that would only give automatic approval to select, non-single use vaping devices as being \u201cintended to protect the tobacco industry and its combustible cigarette.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think that this bill gives an unfair advantage to tobacco companies,\u201d Drummond retorted. \u201cIf you had them here, they could tell you they\u2019re not happy with the bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not trying to hurt small businesses. We\u2019re trying to save the lives of our children,\u201d she emphasized.<\/p>\n<p>Neither HB7 or HB8 were actually voted on yesterday; both will be officially considered by the House Judiciary Committee during their next meeting.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>After the public hearings, the committee considered and favorably reported several bills, including the Senate version of the Speedy Trial Act and HB42, a bill introduced by Rep.
