{"id":147430,"date":"2025-03-21T09:34:46","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T09:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/african-music\/african-china-vs-lilly-pincher-revisiting-the-fight-for-a-better-nigeria\/"},"modified":"2025-03-21T09:34:46","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T09:34:46","slug":"african-china-vs-lilly-pincher-revisiting-the-fight-for-a-better-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=147430","title":{"rendered":"African China vs Lilly &#038; Pincher: Revisiting the fight for a better Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sportal365images.com\/process\/smp-images-production\/pulse.ng\/20032025\/ac6be363-de6b-41e9-a1cf-8ada3b257372.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<section>\n<p>While <a target=\"_self\" class=\"editor-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pulse.ng\/articles\/news\/local\/87-percent-of-poor-people-in-nigeria-are-from-the-north-world-bank-2024081617361774390\"><strong>the disparity between the poor and rich is at an all time high in Nigeria<\/strong><\/a>, things weren&#8217;t too different in the past as a plethora of Nigerian music proves.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>One of the<a target=\"_self\" class=\"editor-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pulse.ng\/articles\/entertainment\/music\/jaja-jaga-and-9-songs-that-tell-the-story-of-bad-governance-in-nigeria-2025031709510643817\"> <strong>famous songs that called for socioeconomic justice in Nigeria<\/strong><\/a> is African China&#8217;s <i>&#8216;Mr. President&#8217;.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>On this week&#8217;s Afrobeats Throwback, we take a look at the classic record and the attempt by another artist to deliver a rebuttal. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Through<a target=\"_self\" class=\"editor-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pulse.ng\/articles\/pulse-nigeria\/daddy-showkey-veteran-galala-singer-talks-history-of-indigenous-rap-music-in-nigeria-2024080418470500802\"> <strong>Galala music<\/strong> <\/a>which is itself a fusion of elements from Hip Hop, Reggae, Highlife, and Gyration birthed from <a target=\"_self\" class=\"editor-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pulse.ng\/articles\/news\/local\/give-back-to-ajegunle-council-chairman-tells-football-music-superstars-2024092615435640893\"><strong>the Ajegunle axis of Lagos<\/strong><\/a>, African China made a bold call on the Nigerian leaders to tow the path of justice.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>With its colourful use of pidgin English, vivid description of the economic reality, and groovy Galala production that called listeners to crouch mid-way and shuffle their legs,<i> &#8216;Mr. President&#8217;<\/i> became an instant hit.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"RichText_embedded__KDcQP\">\n<section class=\"RichText_youtube-embed-wrapper__SaRco\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"African China - Mr. President\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nK7UUKxTMLM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>The lines <i>&#8220;Rich man wey steal money dem no go show him face for crime fighters. But poor man wey steal maggi dem go show him face for crime fighter,&#8221; <\/i>is one that connected strongly with a large population whose reality it documented.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Indeed, the bulk of Nigeria&#8217;s corrupt political elite were having a field day looting the country dry, and the few who were apprehended were let off with barely a slap on the wrist. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>On the other hand, a poor man who steals something small and insignificant like a seasoning cube (Maggi) would have his face slapped on the then-popular TV show Crime Fighters.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p><i>&#8216;Mr President&#8217;<\/i> became a call for change in a generation where artists show an admirable level of sociopolitical consciousness by highlighting the hunger and injustice in the land. <\/p>\n<p>However, not everyone agreed with African China and his social justice crusade.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3>Lilly &amp; Pincher: <i>No Look Him Face<\/i><\/h3>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>While Nigerians from different creeds sang along to African China&#8217;s<i> &#8216;Mr President,&#8217; <\/i>singing duo <strong>Lilly <\/strong>&amp; <strong>Pincher <\/strong>didn&#8217;t appear to share similar sentiments. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Such was the strong difference they felt that they were motivated to record a rebuttal they called<i> &#8216;No Look Him Face&#8217;.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>The young men who also went by <strong>Soldiers For Christ <\/strong>were a product of the Ajegunle music hub that produced <strong>Daddy Showkey <\/strong>and <strong>Danfo Drivers<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"RichText_embedded__KDcQP\">\n<section class=\"RichText_youtube-embed-wrapper__SaRco\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"No Look Him Face - Soldier of Christ\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eW6oUCzqV64?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>They referred to <strong>African China<\/strong> who is also a product of the city as an alarmist attempting to blow up dust over non-existent economic issues.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Lilly &amp; Pincher retaining the original sonic structure of <i>&#8216;Mr President&#8217; <\/i>argued that African China&#8217;s claim of hunger were false. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>They even went as far as abandoning the subject matter by focusing on African China&#8217;s looks before asking the president to pay him no attention. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>The song appeared like an attempt by Lilly &amp; Pincher to get commercial success and mass attention by dissing African China who had become a national sensation. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Pitching their tent with the government was a small price to pay for the potential career turning point that the moment could become.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2>The Aftermath <\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>The plan worked as predicted for <strong>Lilly <\/strong>&amp; <strong>Pincher <\/strong>whose rebuttal also became popular albeit for negative reasons. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Whatever impact that singing had on their career was also shortlived as the record coupled with <i>&#8216;Paddy&#8217;<\/i> are the most memorable of their career. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Posterity has also sided with African China&#8217;s <i>&#8216;Mr President&#8217; <\/i>which is now a classic song whose message continues to echo the call for socioeconomic justice in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While the disparity between the poor and rich is at an all time high in Nigeria, things weren&#8217;t too different in the past as a plethora of Nigerian music proves.
