We\u2019ve all gone through it. The <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/tag-manager\/devguide\">developer guide<\/a> as well as the new and improved <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/tagmanager\/?hl=en#topic=3441530\">help center<\/a> are very useful, but they do not answer all the questions a thorough implementation project might face. There are many ways to find answers to your questions, and I thought I\u2019d go through some of my favorite options here.<\/p>\n<p>                <span class=\"simmer\"><br \/>\n  <span class=\"close\">X<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n    <span class=\"fa fa-md fa-bell\"\/><br \/>\n    <strong>The Simmer Newsletter<\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Subscribe to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/newsletter\/\">Simmer newsletter<\/a> to get the latest news and content from Simo Ahava into your email inbox!\n  <\/p>\n<p>  <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tip-22-get-gtm-assistance\">Tip 22: Get GTM Assistance<\/h2>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 960 \/ 540;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/05\/get-gtm-assistance.jpg\" title=\"Get Google Tag Manager help\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"540\" width=\"960\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/05\/get-gtm-assistance.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Get Google Tag Manager help\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>To help you in getting help with GTM, there are two things we\u2019ll need to go over: <strong>where<\/strong> to look for help, and <strong>how<\/strong> to ask for assistance.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"where-to-find-help\">Where to find help<\/h3>\n<p>Here are some of the best resources for learning about GTM, and for getting assistance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/communities\/104865292981489764063\">Google+ Google Tag Manager community<\/a> is the best place to ask your questions. It has dozens of members who are active daily, and they almost compete to be the first to answer your question. Google+ is <em>definitely<\/em> the best place to get help. You might even run into some of the GTM developers in the community as well!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/productforums.google.com\/forum\/#!categories\/tag-manager\">The Official Google Tag Manager Forum<\/a> is a good place to get help as well, though I find it more suitable for GTM beginners. Response activity isn\u2019t as great as on Google+, but you might get a more thorough reply. The problem is that there\u2019s very little editing or moderation. Since the forums aren\u2019t always that active, wrong answers might persist for a far longer time, doing a lot of damage before anyone notices. Some GTM developers are actively responding to questions here as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stackoverflow.com\/questions\/tagged\/google-tag-manager\">Stack Overflow<\/a> is always a good place to ask any questions, as the community has strict rules that maintain quality of both questions and responses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/analytics\/partners\">Google Analytics Certified Partners<\/a> can help you in many ways, but in this case we\u2019re not talking about free tips and assistance anymore, but actually hiring a consultant to help you with your issues.<\/p>\n<p>On top of these four places, Google search is your friend, my friend. Please, please, please use Google to see if someone has tackled your problem already. At the very least, you\u2019ll find blogs such as this one or the awesome <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bounteous.com\/insights\/\">Bounteous<\/a> blog, where you\u2019ll find many articles and <strong>blog comments<\/strong> that should inspire you to find the help you need.<\/p>\n<p>I know I sound like a broken record, but take a look at the Google+ community. It\u2019s the most awesome place to get GTM help from, as well as start up some inspiring discussions around best practices or advanced implementations, for example.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-to-ask-for-help\">How to ask for help<\/h3>\n<p>I hope I don\u2019t sound smug or pretentious, but please read the following very, very carefully. I spend a lot of time answering questions, and if everyone asked their questions with the following steps in mind, I\u2019d save countless hours of back-and-forth, trying to debug the issue with very little to work on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Always provide repro steps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Always, always, <em>always<\/em> describe your problem so that the person who\u2019s helping you can follow exactly how you encountered the issue. And if it\u2019s not a problem you\u2019re looking for help with, but rather some conceptual question or something, always provide a <strong>clear and well-written description<\/strong> of the issue. Try to step into the reader\u2019s shoes. Would <em>you<\/em> understand what the issue is if you read your own question?<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) (Almost) always provide a test URL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A URL where you have a live version of the GTM container with the issue will save <em>hours<\/em> from those who help you. Honestly, it\u2019s the single best way to debug your issue. But it does require that the container is live. If you can\u2019t publish it due to the problem, naturally it can\u2019t be debugged on the live site. Also, if it\u2019s a website in development, and behind a VPN or something, it\u2019s understandable you won\u2019t be able to share access. One excuse which I just do not understand is \u201cit\u2019s my client\u2019s website, and I can\u2019t share the URL because of privacy issues\u201d. If it\u2019s a public website, that\u2019s the worst excuse ever, and you\u2019ll have a hard time trying to get people to help you if you can\u2019t meet them halfway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Screencast, screenshots, Preview\/View\/Edit access<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These would be awesome to have when debugging. A screencast is great, but it might be difficult to figure out just what things you\u2019ll need to include in the cast. Screenshots are a must, but nothing beats access to the container. Preview access lets you share Preview mode of the container with anyone, which is a great thing, but View or Edit access to the container is definitely the best and fastest way to get your issue sorted.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"summary\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve got the dough, either contact a Google Analytics Certified Partner, or give a shout on Google+ for freelance help.<\/p>\n<p>Other than that, you\u2019re dependent on the goodwill of others, so do your best in facilitating their debugging work to your best ability. Keep in mind that people who volunteer do so on their own time, so the more information you can give the better. Nothing\u2019s worse than having to repeatedly ask for more information.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, one of the most difficult things in asking for assistance is knowing what\u2019s relevant information. But if you can share the URL, add some screenshots, and describe any errors \/ issues you\u2019ve witnessed, you\u2019re off to a great start.<\/p>\n<p>Happy hunting!
