As we pass the midpoint of March,<\/b> and with five blog articles under
\nmy belt, I have reached the halfway point in my goal of 10 posts<\/b> per month.
\nIt\u2019s been hard going at times, as there\u2019s been a lot happening on both the
\ndomestic and the work front, including the planning of a couple more cruises. \u00a0<\/span>The latter demonstrates that play is just as
\nimportant as work, if not more so! In the meantime, I have remained occupied
\nwith several projects leading to improvements on both the house and garden
\nfronts. I won’t bore you with the details now, although I will return to that great
\nBritish standby<\/b> topic, of the weather. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

So far this month, we\u2019ve experienced intermittent spells of
\nwarm weather, interspersed by a couple of cold, and I mean very cold, snaps. During
\nmy lunchtime walk yesterday, I had to return briefly to the office to grab my
\nwoolly hat due to the cold northerly wind.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Walking across the old Penshurst
\nairfield <\/b>meant facing this biting wind directly, but today it was a different
\nscenario, with the beginning of forecast spell of warmer conditions. I\u2019m sure
\nthat poor mother nature doesn\u2019t know which way to turn, but despite recent setbacks
\nspring is well and truly on its way. Numerous daffodils are now in bloom, and
\nsome trees are showing signs of blossom. Typically, blackthorn <\/b>is the first
\ntree to bloom, with its pink and white flowers adding a contrasting touch to
\nthe yellow hues of daffodils and primroses.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

This year, we are saying farewell to the kitchen garden,
\nwhich is the plot of land closest to the house. It did us proud last year, with
\na bountiful crop of runner beans, plus a few sweetcorn, although I rather
\nnaively left it too late, before harvesting the cobs. On the other side of the
\ngarden though, the leeks<\/b> I planted out early last autumn, have come into their
\nown, and we are slowly munching our way through them, not only in stews or
\ncasseroles, but also as tasty late winter vegetables, in their own right.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Growing one\u2019s own veg requires a lot of effort, as well as
\ntime, and it is the latter that I want to have more of this summer, especially as
\nthere are places, I wish to visit and pubs I want to drink in. The kitchen garden
\nthen, is to be converted into an area of hard standing. I have already reached
\nout to an old school friend of Matthew\u2019s,<\/b> who has successfully established his
\nown landscape gardening business, and am waiting for him to call round in order
\nto price up the job.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/b><\/div>\n

Mrs. PBT<\/b> has already staked her claim to this proposed area
\nand marked it as somewhere to \u201csit out”<\/i><\/b>, whatever that means. This is despite us already having a
\npatio area, for that sort of thing. It\u2019s probably just as well that she doesn\u2019t
\nknow of my plan for a new, but smaller greenhouse, as this flat, area of solid
\nground would serve well as the ideal base for such a construction.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Our current,
\nand rather tumbledown greenhouse, came as part of the house, when we moved in
\nduring 1994.<\/b> Although I have made
\nnumerous repairs to the structure, including replacing broken panes with Perspex<\/b>
\nones, and fitting staging inside, thanks to a combination of weather and old
\nage, it has now deteriorated to a point where it is beyond redemption. So, a
\nsmall, compact greenhouse sited nearer the house, seems a practical solution,
\nand one I am determined to press on with.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

In the meantime, we\u2019ve got a couple of cruises to look
\nforward to. The first, in just over a week, is a four-day cruise, to Hamburg<\/b>
\nand back. Our son Matthew<\/b> will accompany us on this short sea voyage, which
\nwill be his first cruise, and his first experience of life afloat. He appears
\nto be looking forward to it, although he has not expressed much enthusiasm
\nverbally. I have assured him of an extended tour of central Hamburg<\/b>, planned to
\nspan from mid-morning until late afternoon, and after reviewing various blogs,
\nincluding Retired Martin’s<\/b>, as well as online recommendations, I have compiled
\na shortlist of potential bars and pubs near the city centre, with one looking out across the Elbe River.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Starting from the third week in May, Mrs PBT\u2019s<\/b> and I will be
\nembarking on a two-week cruise around the coast of the British Isles. <\/b>The
\nitinerary includes several stops in the Highlands<\/b> and Islands,<\/b> with a crossing
\nof the Irish Sea towards the end of the voyage. Our ship will be docking at
\nboth Dublin<\/b> and Cork.<\/b> I may opt to skip the former, having spent a long weekend
\nin the Irish capital<\/b> a decade ago, mainly because the ship docks some distance
\nfrom the city centre, and requires a tender for disembarkation. Eileen<\/b> isn\u2019t over-keen on hopping off one vessel and onto another, particularly if there\u2019s a
\nbit of a swell. Cork<\/b> should be an enjoyable destination, as it is the
\nRepublic’s<\/b> second-largest city and renowned for its legendary stout brands such
\nas Murphy’s<\/b> and Beamish,<\/b> both of which are better than Guinness, <\/b>IMO.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Upon returning from our these two spring holidays, I am
\nplanning to head north and explore a few of the Yorkshire<\/b> towns that I have not
\npreviously had the opportunity to visit in depth, if at all. Halifax,
\nHuddersfield,<\/b> and Hebden Bridge<\/b> spring to mind, so any recommendations as to which is the better
\npub town? After that, is back to domesticity, and the plan is to have
\na new kitchen installed. We\u2019ve been in the house for over 30 years,<\/b> and the
\ncurrent kitchen is the result of a botched DIY job<\/b> by the previous, rather eccentric
\nowner of the property. We will try and arrange for that work to be carried
\nout whilst we\u2019re sailing around Britain’s coastline.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Finally, even though there may be more domestic stuff to write
\nabout later, the blog is undergoing a reorganization. This involves removing a
\nnumber of inactive, or rarely updated blogs, that were cluttering my blog list,
\nmaking it difficult to find active ones. While they don\u2019t affect the blog
\ndirectly, having to scroll through numerous entries that haven\u2019t been updated
\nfor months or longer means it’s time to let go of some, even if they hold
\nsentimental value to their authors. On the plus side, I have added several new
\nsites to the list, more details to follow, if you haven\u2019t spotted these changes
