P-\u200bBand waves are \u200bexpected to be \u200bable to measure \u200bup to 15cm into \u200bthe soil \u200bunimpeded by \u200bvegetation and \u200btillage \u200bfeatures. \u200b<\/p>\n<p>\nDrones have \u200bthe capacity to \u200banalyse soil \u200bmoisture at \u200bmetre-level \u200bscales within a \u200bpaddock, \u200ballowing \u200bfarmers to \u200bfocus on \u200bspecific crop \u200birrigation, and \u200bovercomes the \u200bchallenges of \u200baircraft or \u200bsatellite \u200bmapping. \u200b<\/p>\n<p>\nTesting has \u200btaken place \u200bacross two \u200bfarms in \u200bregional \u200bVictoria and \u200bTasmania. One \u200bwas at a dairy \u200bfarm using a \u200bcentre pivot \u200birrigator and \u200bthe other was a \u200bcrop farm using \u200ba linear shift \u200birrigator. \u200b<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWe need \u200bto produce 60% \u200bmore food with \u200bthe same amount \u200bof land and \u200bwater, and we \u200bcan only \u200bachieve this by \u200bbeing more \u200befficient with \u200bthe water we \u200buse through \u200birrigation,\u200b\u201d \u200bProfessor \u200bWalker, Head of \u200bCivil \u200bEngineering at \u200bMonash \u200bUniversity, \u200bsaid. \u200b<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWe need \u200bto know how \u200bmuch the crop \u200bneeds, how much \u200bmoisture is \u200balready there \u200band apply just \u200bthe right \u200bamounts of \u200bwater in the \u200bcorrect places \u200bto avoid \u200bwastage while \u200bkeeping the \u200bcrop at its \u200bpeak growth.\u200b\u201d \u200b<\/p>\n<p>\nGood soil \u200bmoisture allows \u200bfor the optimal \u200bgrowth and \u200byield of crops, \u200bwhile at \u200bbroader spatial \u200bscales also \u200bregulates \u200bweather, \u200bclimate and \u200bflooding. The \u200bwater levels in \u200bthe soil \u200bcontrols \u200bevaporation \u200bover land and \u200bthus the energy \u200bfluxes into the \u200batmosphere. \u200bThis drives the \u200batmospheric \u200bcirculation, \u200bwhich drives \u200bclimate. \u200b<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cIf the \u200bsoil is too dry,\u200b crops can fail \u200bdue to a lack \u200bof water.
