Wherever they disagreed, or however times changed, they always had one thing in common: They believed the United States could set a positive example for the world.<\/p>\n<p>That no longer seems to be the case. Since coming to power earlier this year, the Trump Administration has set out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/implementing-the-presidents-executive-order-on-reevaluating-and-realigning-united-states-foreign-aid\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (freeze)\">freeze<\/a> nearly all foreign aid, including all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/02\/withdrawing-the-united-states-from-and-ending-funding-to-certain-united-nations-organizations-and-reviewing-united-states-support-to-all-international-organizations\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (funding)\">funding<\/a> for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).<\/p>\n<p>This would be a tragic mistake. Even with the long-overdue reprieve of a ceasefire, the humanitarian response in Gaza cannot afford more roadblocks if it hopes to match the scale of the ongoing emergency.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrwausa.org\/?utm_source=google_cpc&amp;utm_medium=pmax&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw4cS-BhDGARIsABg4_J2X2OvUHVfJvo8cE1xetkJz9MVPVlQ7JAXccZiRkiMmlCXg5N-SZLsaAq38EALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (UNRWA USA)\">UNRWA USA<\/a>, where my team and I work to support this agency and its mission, was particularly horrified to see that Israel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israel-agrees-us-plan-temporary-ceasefire-gaza-pms-office-says-2025-03-01\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (blocked)\">blocked<\/a> all humanitarian aid from coming into Gaza on March 2, at a time when crisis levels of food insecurity still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcinfo.org\/ipcinfo-website\/alerts-archive\/issue-94\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (threaten)\">threaten<\/a> more than 90 percent of Gaza\u2019s population, and nearly all hospitals in Gaza have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/19-01-2025-the-ceasefire-in-gaza-brings-hope--but-immense-challenges-lie-ahead-to-restore-the-health-system\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (damaged or destroyed)\">damaged or destroyed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since the ceasefire began, UNRWA has been responsible for 60 percent of all food entering Gaza. Its doctors and nurses currently conduct around 17,000 medical consultations every day. It is the only organization capable of providing the essential wide-scale services, like primary health care and education, that Gaza needs to rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>UNRWA does this life-saving work despite the Israeli Knesset\u2019s outrageous and unlawful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrwausa.org\/unrwa-usa-press-releases\/unrwa-continues-operations-on-the-ground-in-the-occupied-palestinian-territory-despite-unlawful-israel-knesset-ban-and-escalating-challenges\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (ban on communication)\">ban on communication<\/a> between the agency\u2019s staff and Israeli authorities. The ban serves only to endanger UNRWA and the people of Palestine, by making coordination or deconfliction of humanitarian efforts impossible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The United States has long been a consistent resource for UNRWA\u2019s humanitarian work. It has been UNRWA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/crsreports.congress.gov\/product\/pdf\/IN\/IN12316\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (leading donor)\">leading donor<\/a>, contributing more than $7 billion since 1950. In 2023 alone, U.S. government funding constituted nearly 30 percent of UNRWA\u2019s donor contributions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our government must immediately restore funds to UNRWA through a congressional appropriation, and allow UNRWA to more comprehensively provide essential primary health care. It can resume <a href=\"https:\/\/progressive.org\/latest\/for-palestinian-refugee-families-like-mine-unrwa-is-a-lifeline-aljamal-20241126\/\">education<\/a> for hundreds of thousands of children. It can do all this without having to make difficult choices like whether to use fuel to distribute food or fill up a hospital generator<em>.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. public has already shown clear support. They <a href=\"https:\/\/sign.moveon.org\/petitions\/reinstate-unrwa-funding-so-they-can-resume-urgent-humanitarian-aid\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (sent)\">sent<\/a> more than 60,000 messages to Congress in support of UNRWA in 2024, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrwausa.org\/unrwa-usa-press-releases\/unrwa-usa-ramps-up-focus-on-the-restoration-of-us-government-funding-for-humanitarian-aid-including-for-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (provided)\">provided<\/a> more than $56 million in individual donations for humanitarian aid to Gaza through UNRWA USA\u2014all while our own government tragically stepped down from its humanitarian duty.<\/p>\n<p>Now that two humanitarian funding bills have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hirono.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/hirono-colleagues-introduce-the-unrwa-funding-emergency-restoration-act\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (reintroduced)\">reintroduced<\/a> in Congress, our representatives have an opportunity. They can follow their predecessors\u2019 example by offering hope to refugees during the darkest chapter in Palestinian history.<\/p>\n<p>The measures are supported by many brave members of Congress, including Senator\u00a0Peter Welch (Democrat of Vermont), and Representatives\u00a0Andre Carson (Democrat of Indiana), Pramila Jayapal (Democrat of Washington),\u00a0and Jan Schakowsky (Democrat of Illinois). Co-sponsorship of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/5388\/cosponsors\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (previous Senate bill)\">previous Senate bill<\/a> to resume funding for UNRWA included Senators\u00a0Chris Van Hollen (Democrat of Maryland), Bernie Sanders, (Independent of Vermont), Amy Klobuchar (Democrat of Minnesota), Mazie Hirono (Democrat of Hawaii),\u00a0and Jeff Merkley (Democrat of Oregon).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These lawmakers are not alone. In late February, UNRWA USA was joined by more than forty advocates representing sixteen states in support of the forthcoming UNRWA Funding Restoration Act. Advocates flew as far as Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, and California to express support for the agency.<\/p>\n<p>Restoring UNRWA funding is a vital part of how we carry on the work of leaders who came before us, and make tomorrow a little safer, a little more peaceful, and a little more free.
