In 2005, Arkansas groundwater supplied approximately 7.5 billion gallons of water daily to the state, with almost 7 billion gallons used for irrigation alone, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geology.arkansas.gov\/water\/groundwater.html\">Arkansas Office of the State Geologist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uaex.uada.edu\/publications\/pdf\/2024-Ark-Ag-Profile.pdf\">$24 billion industry<\/a> in Arkansas, depends heavily on irrigation.<\/p>\n<p>Edward Swaim, executive director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bayoumeto.org\/home\">Bayou Meto Water Management District<\/a> in Lonoke, Arkansas, emphasizes the importance of conserving and using groundwater effectively. Bayou Meto works to provide reliable and sustainable water resources for agriculture, conserve groundwater, and support long-term water use for farmers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGroundwater is foundational for Arkansas, the Mid-South region, and beyond,\u201d said Swaim. \u201cIt supplies the majority of our state\u2019s water that is used for irrigation. So, it\u2019s vital for groundwater levels to remain constant, or rise, to meet the state\u2019s growing needs. The demand for water is certainly not decreasing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the 12<sup>th<\/sup> Annual Mid-South Agricultural and Environmental Law Conference, Swaim will present, \u201cGroundwater Law &amp; Agriculture in the Mid-South: Taking Stock of the Road Ahead.\u201d The conference is co-hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalaglawcenter.org\/\">National Agricultural Law Center<\/a>, or NALC, and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture Foundation, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasda.org\/nasda-foundation\/\">NASDA Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a previous role with the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission, Swaim helped update the Arkansas Water Plan, of which a major component is groundwater allocation and efficient utilization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the Mid-South conference, I will cover how Arkansas uses, measures and addresses challenges to groundwater availability,\u201d Swaim said. \u201cI will also cover what other Mid-South states are doing in this regard. There is a lot we can learn from each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conference will be held June 5-6 in Memphis, Tennessee. Before the main conference sessions on June 6, the annual \u201cBeer &amp; BBQ\u201d networking dinner will be held on the evening of June 5 at <a href=\"https:\/\/hogsfly.com\/\">Charlie Vergos Rendezvous<\/a>.
