CHILLIWACK, B.C.\u2014 A video exposing acts of animal cruelty and a blatant disregard for animal protection laws inside the Johnston\u2019s Meats pig slaughterhouse in Chilliwack, B.C.\u00a0is back online after the company\u2019s unsuccessful attempt to suppress the footage.<\/p>\n

Unable to deny the authenticity of the legally obtained whistleblower video, Johnston\u2019s resorted to flagging the limited use of the company\u2019s marketing material, which Animal Justice included in its expos\u00e9, well within the \u201cfair dealing\u201d boundaries of Canadian copyright law.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the company has refused to publicly acknowledge the video\u2019s existence and its representatives have been\u00a0nowhere to be found<\/a>\u00a0when reporters have reached out for comment. That\u2019s despite the fact the video has prompted parallel investigations by the BC SPCA and the province\u2019s Ministry of Agriculture.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Though the damning footage was temporarily removed while Animal Justice\u2019s counterclaim was reviewed by Vimeo, where the video is hosted, it is\u00a0now back online.<\/a>\u00a0The streaming platform found no issue with the Animal Justice expos\u00e9.<\/p>\n

\u201cRather than acknowledge the horrors revealed by this disturbing whistleblower video, Johnston\u2019s Meats has instead tried to slide the door shut on public discussion and criticism of its unethical and unlawful activity,\u201d said Camille Labchuk, lawyer and executive director at Animal Justice. \u201cTo avoid accountability, Johnston\u2019s is employing an increasingly standard industry playbook of gaslighting the public while stifling journalists seeking to report on these abuses\u201d<\/p>\n

The video recorded at Johnston\u2019s Meats, a provincially-licensed facility that slaughters around 500 pigs from the Fraser Valley daily, shows improper use of stunning equipment, leaving pigs in agony during the slaughter process, cut open while still alert and conscious.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The many hours of whistleblower footage was verified and reviewed by Animal Justice and subsequently submitted to authorities. It also shows workers abusing pigs, including kicking and prodding them.\u00a0<\/p>\n
