Britt calls for age verification enforcement on social media applications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">U.S. Senator Katie Britt, R-Ala., participated in a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism hearing entitled \u201cEnding the Scourge: The Need for the STOP CSAM Act.\u201d The\u00a0Strengthening Transparency and Obligations to Protect Children Suffering from Abuse and Mistreatment Act would help to \u201ccrack down on the proliferation of child sexual abuse material online by, among other provisions, allowing victims to more easily sue companies that host this material,\u201d Britt\u2019s release stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Senator Britt heard from multiple witnesses, including<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">John Pizzuro, CEO of Raven, an advocacy organization focused on ending child exploitation in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In her line of questioning, she recounted Pizzuro\u2019s witness testimony during a previous Judiciary Committee hearing where he stated an alarming statistic about the number of children who are likely to be victimized during their lifetimes.\u00a0\u201cIn addition to reforming Section 230 and passing bills such as STOP CSAM Act, I am of the view that one of the things that Congress needs to do is ensure that social media platforms verify the ages of their users, rather than relying on them to do that themselves . . . typically what [social media platforms] say, you can\u2019t be on there until you\u2019re 13, but they never verify that, so that\u2019s just meaningless,\u201d\u00a0said Senator Britt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Recent data from the U.S. Surgeon General\u2019s report indicates that nearly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/sg-youth-mental-health-social-media-advisory.pdf\"><span class=\"s3\">40 percent of children<\/span><\/a>\u00a0between the ages of 8 and 12 use social media. The rise in child sexual exploitation and abuse has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/21\/health\/children-online-sexual-abuse-wellness\/index.html\"><span class=\"s3\">no doubt proliferated<\/span><\/a>\u00a0due to the rise of social media, with the FBI estimating that as many as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ahs.atlantichealth.org\/about-us\/stay-connected\/news\/content-central\/2024\/10-facts-about-kids-and-teens-on-social-media.html\"><span class=\"s3\">500,000 sexual predators<\/span><\/a>\u00a0utilize social media to prey on children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Senator Britt highlighted social media legislation she led in the 118th<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0Congress, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britt.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/u-s-senators-katie-britt-tom-cotton-brian-schatz-chris-murphy-introduce-bipartisan-legislation-to-help-protect-kids-on-social-media\/\"><span class=\"s3\">Protecting Kids on Social Media Act<\/span><\/a>, which would require social media companies to undertake rigorous age verification measures based on the latest technology.\u00a0In the hearing, she addressed the need to enforce age verification on social media apps,\u00a0asking Pizzuro,\u00a0\u201cDo you have any views regarding how Congress may best approach the age verification issue?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cYes, device-based. Your phone knows how old you are, right? So if I\u2019m ten years old and I try to download Snap[chat] and I try to get on it, [the phone] knows that I\u2019m not [of age],\u201d\u00a0Pizzuro responded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSo the information exists,\u201d\u00a0confirmed Senator Britt.\u00a0\u201cSo then enforcing this, making these companies actually be able to not download an app, let\u2019s say if you know that the child that owns the phone is under the age of that of which [an app] should be available, shouldn\u2019t actually be that hard . . .\u201d\u00a0She continued, saying, \u201cSo what you\u2019re telling me is\u00a0we have all of the information we already need to help protect our children, correct to age verification. We just have companies that are unwilling to do the hard thing that would be the best thing for our kids.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pizzuro affirmed Senator Britt\u2019s statement\u00a0that tech companies already have much of the necessary data needed to undertake age verification.\u00a0\u201c . . . and not only that,\u201d\u00a0Pizzuro continued,\u00a0\u201csomething along that thing as a solution would actually help parents because parents don\u2019t understand every new app that comes in. So you give parents the ability to protect their children at home. I mean, to me, what\u2019s better than that?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs a parent of a 14 and a 15-year-old, I say Amen . . . What we know now versus what we knew when all of this began and then the rise in social media and the nexus to the lives of our children, we have a duty and an obligation to do something about that. And what I hear you saying to me today is these companies already have this information, so it is a choice that they are making with regards to allowing these things to be downloaded on these phones . . .
