Indices are numbered in order, with the first index always being at location <strong>zero (0)<\/strong>. This means that to get the first value stored in Array <code>simo<\/code>, you\u2019d use something like:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\"><span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> firstValue = simo[<span style=\"color:#099\">0<\/span>];\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/tagmanager.google.com\">Google Tag Manager<\/a>, you can push Arrays into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/data-layer\/\">Data Layer<\/a>. However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/variable-guide-google-tag-manager\/\">Data Layer Variable<\/a> type, which you use to retrieve values stored in the Data Layer, does <strong>not<\/strong> support the aforementioned square bracket notation in its fields. Just substitute the <strong>square brackets<\/strong> you\u2019d use in vanilla JavaScript with <strong>dots<\/strong>. So classic JavaScript <code>Array[0].name<\/code> becomes <code>Array.0.name<\/code> in Google Tag Manager.<\/p>\n<p>Do note that this also means that you can\u2019t use square bracket notation to access object literal properties either. You need to use dot notation all the way through.<\/p>\n<p>A practical example is in Ecommerce tracking. To get the SKU of the first product in an <code>ecommerce.purchase<\/code> object (<a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/tag-manager\/enhanced-ecommerce\">Enhanced Ecommerce<\/a>), you\u2019d use this in a Data Layer Variable:<\/p>\n<p><strong>ecommerce.purchase.products.0.id<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That retrieves the value stored in the <code>id<\/code> key of the first product in the <code>products<\/code> Array of the Enhanced Ecommerce <code>purchase<\/code> object.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In JavaScript, if you want to access an Array member, you use square bracket notation to retrieve the value stored at a specific index.
