Sam Givhan finally said the quiet part out loud: Is Tommy Tuberville really about to run for governor \u2014 from his $6 million Florida beach house?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"239\" data-end=\"495\">It\u2019s the question Alabama politicos have been whispering ever since Tuberville floated the idea of trading Washington for Montgomery. But on Huntsville\u2019s WVNN, Givhan didn\u2019t whisper. He laid it out bluntly: owning a modest house in Auburn doesn\u2019t cut it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"497\" data-end=\"707\">\u201cSo, as far as governor, the first thing, we still got a question, because owning a house in Alabama is not enough,\u201d Givhan said. \u201cI mean, you have to live here seven years \u2026 So, that\u2019s going to be a hurdle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"709\" data-end=\"825\">And what a hurdle it is \u2014 especially when the paper trail points straight to Florida\u2019s white sands and blue water.<\/p>\n<p>Givhan, for one, doesn\u2019t sound convinced. During a recent interview on Huntsville\u2019s WVNN, he openly questioned whether Tuberville\u2019s living arrangements would hold up under scrutiny \u2014 and worried that any mess over residency could open the door for \u201ccrackpots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s not wrong \u2014 but the issue is more tangled than it looks.<\/p>\n<p>APR has dug through real estate records, legal filings, and public documents trying to pin down where Tuberville has actually called home over the last seven years. If he really plans to jump into a governor\u2019s race against well-funded, battle-ready contenders, he\u2019ll need to prove one thing beyond doubt: that his legal, primary residence has been on Cherry Street in Auburn \u2014 not on Old Beach Road in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Because the paper trail \u2014 and the optics \u2014 aren\u2019t on his side.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the basics. The Auburn home is a modest 1,500-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bath house in a middle-class neighborhood near Auburn University. It\u2019s owned by Tuberville\u2019s wife, Suzanne, and his son, Tucker, and valued at just under $400,000.<\/p>\n<p>Compare that to the 4,000-square-foot, beachfront mansion on Old Beach Road in Florida \u2014 valued at about $6 million \u2014 that Tuberville has owned for two decades.<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s the kicker: in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/espnpr\/status\/887725341158060032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 ESPN interview<\/a>, Tuberville himself made it sound like that beach house is exactly where he belongs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix months ago, after 40 years of coaching football, I hung up my whistle and moved to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, with the white sands and the blue water,\u201d Tuberville said in the video, recorded in July 2017 \u2014 the same year the Cherry Street house was purchased.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t end there.<\/p>\n<p>Legal documents from the 2023 purchase of yet another Florida condo list Tuberville\u2019s primary residence as the same Old Beach Road mansion. The Auburn house? Not mentioned.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>That Auburn house has drawn media attention before. In 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/08\/10\/tommy-tuberville-floridas-third-senator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Washington Post<\/em> <\/a>reported that Tuberville had sold off his last Alabama properties. At the time, his spokesperson insisted Tuberville primarily lived in the Cherry Street home.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson\u2019s explanation? The house was bought for Tucker while he was at Auburn. But that timeline didn\u2019t quite line up: the purchase came after Tucker graduated and about a year before Tuberville\u2019s younger son began school there.<\/p>\n<p>When <em>The Post<\/em> pointed out the inconsistency, the story shifted. The spokesperson then claimed that Tucker lived there briefly, after which Tuberville himself moved in and made it his primary residence in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>All while Tuberville was on national television touting his Florida life.<\/p>\n<p>More documents are sure to surface, and Alabama law is clear: candidates for governor must have been residents of the state for seven consecutive years.
