id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Vladimir Putin has ordered Russia\u2019s military to refrain from striking Ukrainian energy infrastructure for 30 days, but stopped short of agreeing to an unconditional ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin said that the Russian president had \u201creacted positively\u201d to a suggestion by Donald Trump to halt the attacks in a much-anticipated call between the two leaders on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>It added that Putin \u201cimmediately gave the Russian military the corresponding order\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In comments on Sunday, Trump had suggested that both \u201cland\u201d and \u201cpower plants\u201d would be divided between Kyiv and Moscow in any final peace settlement, a seeming reference to Ukrainian assets currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/war-in-ukraine\" data-trackable=\"link\">occupied by Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But, rather than agreeing to the US president\u2019s proposal for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, Putin highlighted a \u201cseries of significant issues\u201d about enforcing such an agreement and \u201cserious risks\u201d concerning Kyiv\u2019s compliance.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on Truth Social on Tuesday, Trump described the talks with Putin as \u201cvery good and productive\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cMany elements of a Contract for Peace were discussed\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009That process is now in full force and effect and we will, hopefully, for the sake of Humanity, get the job done.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Readouts from the call offered no indication that Putin was willing to compromise on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/532ea690-0940-4155-ae85-6decc170849d\" data-trackable=\"link\">maximalist goals<\/a> to end the war, which amount in effect to ending Ukraine\u2019s existence as an independent state while rolling back most of Nato\u2019s expansion east of the former Iron Curtain.<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin said Putin stressed that Russia\u2019s \u201ckey condition to stop the conflict from escalating\u201d and move towards a settlement would be a \u201ctotal end to foreign military support and intelligence sharing with Kyiv\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Kyiv <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3e001e52-5e25-4088-9172-fc97b901530c\" data-trackable=\"link\">signed up to Trump\u2019s 30-day truce<\/a> after pressure from Washington, which had suspended both military aid and intelligence sharing.<\/p>\n<p>According to the readout, Putin said on Tuesday that he was ready to work with the US to end the war but insisted any agreement must \u201ctake into account the unconditional necessity to remove the initial reasons for the crisis and Russia\u2019s legal security interests\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The readout added that Moscow and Washington would set up expert groups to work on bilateral paths to a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>The White House said the two presidents had \u201cagreed this conflict needs to end with a lasting peace\u201d and \u201cstressed the need for improved bilateral relations between the United States and Russia\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>It added that they had \u201cagreed that the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire\u201d \u2014 with \u201ctechnical negotiations\u201d to begin on implementing a \u201cmaritime ceasefire in the Black Sea\u201d followed by talks on a \u201cfull ceasefire and permanent peace\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the call, a\u00a0senior Ukrainian official involved in peace negotiations said an energy infrastructure ceasefire is \u201cthe only realistic proposal because, ultimately, Putin wants war\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b3281f4f-731e-434f-89e2-53dec0e8b933\" data-trackable=\"link\"> initially floated the possibility<\/a> of a truce on attacking energy targets in October, saying that it could pave the way to broader peace talks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The senior Ukrainian official added that Kyiv had asked the White House for \u201cfull information\u201d about the call with Putin and was waiting for a response.<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin said Putin had reacted \u201cpositively\u201d to Trump\u2019s proposal on Black Sea maritime security and agreed to hold further talks on the matter. <\/p>\n<p>It added that the two leaders discussed a \u201cbroad spectrum of directions\u201d where the US and Russia could co-operate further, including \u201cmutually beneficial partnerships in economics and energy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Putin and Trump also discussed the Middle East and said they would make \u201cjoint efforts to stabilise the situation in crisis zones\u201d, as well as \u201cestablishing co-operation\u201d on nuclear non-proliferation and global security, the Kremlin said. <\/p>\n<p>Trump also agreed to Putin\u2019s suggestion that Russia and the US each host international ice hockey matches featuring players from both countries, the Kremlin added.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s call followed a conversation between Trump and Putin in February that launched the US president\u2019s efforts to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p>Over the past month, Trump has placed heavy pressure on Zelenskyy to make concessions and negotiate a settlement with Putin.<\/p>\n<p>The US president has been criticised both domestically and internationally for being far less demanding of his Russian counterpart, though he has threatened to impose additional sanctions on Russia if Putin fails to engage in the peace talks.<\/p>\n<p>Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine throughout his 2024 presidential campaign, placing it at the top of his foreign policy plans for his second term.
