So, if you send the dimension or metric with a product in the <strong>Add to cart<\/strong> payload, it will only exist in that event. It <strong>won\u2019t persist<\/strong> through the entire Enhanced Ecommerce funnel!<\/p>\n<p>This is crucial information, as it reminds us that Enhanced Ecommerce is very clinical by nature. Barring some exceptions (e.g. product list click attribution), a well-oiled Enhanced Ecommerce funnel requires <em>consistency<\/em>. It\u2019s critical to maintain a uniform product object throughout the funnel, adding relevant dimensions when they become available, as product variant (e.g. size) might be something you select only <em>after<\/em> the detail view, when you add the product to cart.<\/p>\n<p>Product-scoped custom dimensions and metrics give you more dimensions and metrics to play with, but they are bound by the same consistency requirement as the regular dimensions and metrics. So keep this in mind when implementing them. In the picture above, <code>dimension12<\/code> is used to maintain product size, which is \u201cN\/A\u201d until the Add To Cart step. So any queries for \u201cShow product abc123 with size Large\u201d would only return hits for Add To Cart, Checkout and Purchase &#8211; not Impressions or Detail.<\/p>\n<p>Example uses for these custom dimensions and metrics would be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>In stock vs. out of stock (dimension)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Stock status (metric)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Profit margin (dimension if percentage, metric if value)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>VAT-less price (metric)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Host product or bundle add-on (dimension)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To implement product-scoped custom definitions, you basically add the dimension or metric key directly into the relevant <code>products<\/code> Array object in <code>dataLayer<\/code>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\"><span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer.push({\n  <span style=\"color:#a50\">'event'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'eecDetail'<\/span>,\n  <span style=\"color:#a50\">'ecommerce'<\/span> : {\n    <span style=\"color:#a50\">'detail'<\/span> : {\n      <span style=\"color:#a50\">'products'<\/span> : [{\n        <span style=\"color:#a50\">'id'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'abc123'<\/span>,\n        <span style=\"color:#a50\">'dimension3'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'In Stock'<\/span>,\n        <span style=\"color:#a50\">'metric5'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'11.99'<\/span>\n      },{\n        <span style=\"color:#a50\">'id'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'abc234'<\/span>,\n        <span style=\"color:#a50\">'dimension3'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'Out of Stock'<\/span>,\n        <span style=\"color:#a50\">'metric5'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'13.00'<\/span>\n      }]\n    }\n  }\n});\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>After this, any Enhanced Ecommerce \/ Data Layer -enabled Tag which fires on Custom Event <strong>eecDetail<\/strong> will also send these custom dimension and metric values to GA along with their respective products.<\/p>\n<p>To be more generic with <code>dataLayer<\/code>, a simple way of incorporating Google Analytics -specific dimensions (such as these product-scoped definitions) is to utilize the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/enhanced-ecommerce-with-a-custom-javascript-variable\/\">Custom JavaScript Variable<\/a> method for Enhanced Ecommerce implementation.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to see a nice example of how to use a product-scoped custom metric, check out my post on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/measure-cart-value-in-enhanced-ecommerce\/\">measuring cart value<\/a> with Google Tag Manager.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the advent of Enhanced Ecommerce for Universal Analytics, a new scope was introduced for Custom Dimensions and Metrics.
