{"id":141504,"date":"2025-03-18T11:17:55","date_gmt":"2025-03-18T11:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/animation\/village-roadshow-files-for-chapter-11-bankruptcy-after-matrix-lawsuit\/"},"modified":"2025-03-18T11:17:55","modified_gmt":"2025-03-18T11:17:55","slug":"village-roadshow-files-for-chapter-11-bankruptcy-after-matrix-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=141504","title":{"rendered":"Village Roadshow Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy After &#8216;Matrix&#8217; Lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/village-roadshow\/\" id=\"auto-tag_village-roadshow_1\" data-tag=\"village-roadshow\">Village Roadshow<\/a> Entertainment Group has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe film production and financing company that worked on franchises like <em>The Matrix<\/em>, <em>Ocean\u2019s Eleven<\/em>, <em>Joker<\/em>, <em>The Lego Movie<\/em> and <em>Wonka <\/em>filed for bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the filing, Village Roadshow framed its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/village-roadshows-lawsuit-against-warner-bros-over-matrix-resurrections-sent-to-arbitration-1235155383\/\">ongoing arbitration dispute <\/a>with Warner Bros. over <em>The Matrix Resurrections <\/em>as a turning point, effectively ending what had been its most lucrative business arrangement. Village Roadshow had sued for breach of contract after WB released the franchise film on Max the same day it was released in theaters, which has cost the company $18 million in legal fees and counting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe Company historically enjoyed a prolific co-production, co-financing and co-ownership relationship with WB, which included the production, ownership and derivative rights flowing from 89 titles \u2014 including the <em>Matrix<\/em> franchise \u2014 and comprised the vast majority of the Debtors\u2019 business,\u201d according to the filing, signed by Accordion Partners managing director Keith Maib, Village Roadshow\u2019s restructuring adviser.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cEven if the WB Arbitration is resolved, the Company believes that it has irreparably decimated the working relationship between WB and the Company, which has been the most lucrative nexus for the Company\u2019s historic success in the entertainment industry,\u201d the filing continued. \u201cWhile the WB Arbitration does not impact the Debtors\u2019 entitlements (including rights to receive payments in connection with) or ownership stake in its most valuable assets, the Library Assets, it has eradicated the Company\u2019s potential income stream from the exploitation of the Derivative Rights and any new projects that could be co-financed by the Company and WB, both of which, prior to the WB Arbitration, were vital to the Company\u2019s ongoing success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe company listed assets valued at $100 million to $500 million, and liabilities of $500 million to $1 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMost of the value is in the form of the company\u2019s library assets, with CP Ventura LLC attached to the filing as a \u201cstalking horse\u201d bidder for those assets at $365 million. The filing indicates that there was at least one other interested bidder for the library assets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tVillage Roadshow has had a difficult few months leading to Monday\u2019s bankruptcy filing. CEO Steve Mosko <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/village-roadshow-ceo-steve-mosko-steps-down-1236116691\/\">stepped down<\/a> earlier this year, and multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/village-roadshow-layoffs-1236022643\/\">rounds of layoffs<\/a> have left only a skeleton staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLast year the WGA added Village Roadshow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/wga-members-prohibited-working-village-roadshow-1236092310\/\">to its strike list<\/a> after it failed to pay writers, underscoring the dire financial straits it was facing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe filing indicates that Village Roadshow had enlisted Goldman Sachs to advise it on a possible sale last year and had found an interested buyer, but the WB arbitration \u201cstifled the ability to close the transaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Village Roadshow Entertainment Group has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
