The title of Dana Milbank\u2019s Washington Post<\/em> piece<\/a> says it all: \u201cStalin, Mao and Khomeini couldn\u2019t quell freedom\u2019s voice. But Trump did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here is a taste:<\/p>\n

Voice of America went on the air eight weeks after Pearl Harbor. \u201cWe bring you voices from America,\u201d journalist William Harlan Hale said in German on Feb. 1, 1942, in\u00a0VOA\u2019s first broadcast<\/a>. \u201cToday, and daily from now on, we shall speak to you about America and the war. The news may be good for us. The news may be bad. But we shall tell you the truth.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In the 83 years since then, VOA has been the voice of freedom across the globe, a constant force countering totalitarianism during World War II, the Cold War and the decades since.<\/em><\/p>\n

Adolf Hitler couldn\u2019t silence it. Joseph Stalin and his successors, right up through Vladimir Putin, couldn\u2019t silence it. Mao Zedong and his successors, through Xi Jinping, couldn\u2019t silence it. Ruhollah Khomeini and the ayatollahs couldn\u2019t silence it.<\/em><\/p>\n

But Donald Trump has just silenced the voice of freedom. For the first time since 1942, VOA has been taken off the air, after Trump put virtually all of its 1,300 staff members on leave. The administration also shut down VOA\u2019s sister outlets Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty and Radio Free Asia.<\/em><\/p>\n

The world\u2019s autocrats are doing somersaults.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe so-called beacon of freedom, VOA, has now been discarded by its own government like a dirty rag,\u201d the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s international media outlet, Global Times,\u00a0wrote on Monday<\/a>\u00a0about the demise of what it calls a \u201clie factory.\u201d It celebrated the silencing of this lone voice for truth in China: \u201cFrom smearing human rights in China\u2019s Xinjiang to hyping up disputes in the South China Sea, from supporting \u2018Taiwan independence\u2019 forces to backing Hong Kong rioters, from fabricating the so-called China virus narrative to promoting the claim of China\u2019s \u2018overcapacity,\u2019 almost every malicious falsehood about China has VOA\u2019s fingerprints all over it.\u201d And it concurred with\u00a0Elon Musk\u2019s view<\/a>\u00a0that VOA is \u201cjust radical left crazy people talking to themselves.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

CCP\u00a0propagandist Hu Xijin<\/a>, the Global Times\u2019s former editor, called the VOA shutdown \u201cgreat news,\u201d explaining that \u201calmost everyone in China knows the Voice of America because it is an iconic symbol of American ideological infiltration into China.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In Iran, where VOA is officially banned as an \u201cenemy broadcaster,\u201d the state-aligned news agency Tabnak celebrated: \u201cTrump administration shuts down anti-Iranian media outlet Voice of America.\u201d VOA, with a newsroom of about 100 Farsi speakers, reached a combined social-media following of 9.5 million in Iran, thwarting the regime with 24\/7 news delivered via satellite and VPNs.<\/em><\/p>\n

Russia, too, can celebrate the demise of a news outlet it last year categorized as an \u201cundesirable organization<\/a>\u201d and a threat to its national security. In Africa and in Latin America, Russian and Chinese propaganda outlets, which have been expanding, will no longer have their lies challenged by a fact-based U.S. alternative.<\/em><\/p>\n

Combined with the Trump administration\u2019s canceling of most foreign aid, the silencing of VOA, which boasted a weekly audience of about\u00a0360 million people in nearly 50 languages<\/a>, signals the complete surrender of U.S. \u201csoft power,\u201d influence gained over decades using means other than warfare.<\/em><\/p>\n
