{"id":140729,"date":"2025-03-18T01:45:57","date_gmt":"2025-03-18T01:45:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/entertainment\/art\/leon-berkowitz-and-wayson-jones-at-hemphill\/"},"modified":"2025-03-18T01:45:57","modified_gmt":"2025-03-18T01:45:57","slug":"leon-berkowitz-and-wayson-jones-at-hemphill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=140729","title":{"rendered":"LEON BERKOWITZ and WAYSON JONES at HEMPHILL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">The halcyon years of the Washington Color School, over half a century ago, still represent the deepest fine arts footprint ever made by our (then) regional artists, elevating most of them to (now) a global presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">There&#8217;s currently a terrific show at Hemphill showcasing the works of two immensely talented artists: Leon Berkowitz and Wayson Jones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">Jones&#8217; work first came to my attention via my good friend Lou Stovall, when Stovall selected Jones in 2010 for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dcartnews.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/tomorrow-at-hillyer-guest-curator-lou.html\">October Members Show in Hillyer Art Space<\/a>.<!--EndFragment--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">I&#8217;ve been following Jones&#8217; work for many years, and in 2018 I wrote about his participation in that year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/dcartnews.blogspot.com\/2018\/11\/superfine-dc-review.html\">Superfine Art Fair <\/a>and highlighted the <i>&#8220;refined works of Wayson R. Jones, whose technique and presentation just keeps getting better and sharper! This is a key DMV artist deserving of more attention by the curatorial cabal of our area.&#8221; <\/i>And two years ago I was in the audience when Jones, who in 2022 was Montgomery College\u2019s Visual and Performing Arts Department&#8217;s Artist in Residence, presented a really good Artist Talk one September day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEgOxk0IT-6tSKoGVwY-Noy84S6orF06P-K_fOnHMPvS-IgE9gYT5SBV93n-qt00VbztUS8N8wylneO8NtLXcK-Itv5TqnYFQh9cKtuF9uaDKSQkotWu-UH7NlLtguCsGWS79nYR6OsuSIdVYaLBiYjAivXCxH-RoquQWpPRN1VWa68q9NsaLnv_\/s640\/Hemphill.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"472\" data-original-width=\"640\" height=\"382\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEgOxk0IT-6tSKoGVwY-Noy84S6orF06P-K_fOnHMPvS-IgE9gYT5SBV93n-qt00VbztUS8N8wylneO8NtLXcK-Itv5TqnYFQh9cKtuF9uaDKSQkotWu-UH7NlLtguCsGWS79nYR6OsuSIdVYaLBiYjAivXCxH-RoquQWpPRN1VWa68q9NsaLnv_\/w519-h382\/Hemphill.jpg\" width=\"519\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">It has been said that &#8220;Leon was a character, a character that stood alone&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abebooks.com\/first-edition\/Gene-Davis-interviews-Walter-Hopps-Barbara\/30979303699\/bd\">&#8220;An Interview with Gene Davis&#8221; <\/a>by Walter Hopps, we learn that the\u00a0The Washington Color School &#8220;members&#8221; did not feel much camaraderie, with each other, and perhaps even a sense of jealousy? George Hemphill notes that:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There are stories of Davis&#8217; extreme annoyance at the Corcoran students gathering in groups and sitting before Berkowitz&#8217;s paintings while leaving his work absent of attention. Berkowitz&#8217;s paintings sold as well, possibly better than others.
