Over the San Antonio Express-News<\/em>, Sig Christensen asks<\/a> why Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth put an end to Black History Month and other celebrations of identity in the military, but gave a pass to St. Patrick\u2019s Day. It\u2019s a fair question.<\/p>\n

A taste:<\/p>\n

After his first week on the job, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth\u00a0canceled cultural awareness observances in the military<\/a>, including Black History Month, Women\u2019s History Month and National Hispanic Heritage Month.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIdentity Months Dead at DoD,\u201d said the headline on\u00a0his Jan. 31 announcement<\/a>. Activities that emphasize gender and racial differences undermine unity and readiness among the troops, Hegseth said.<\/em><\/p>\n

It turns out there are exceptions to the prohibition. Celebrations saluting an Irish Catholic holiday, Irish culture and the wearing of green clothing \u2014 St. Patrick\u2019s Day \u2014 are still on at Joint Base San Antonio and other military installations across the country\u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n

How can these celebrations be squared with Hegseth\u2019s order? That\u2019s what some service members would like to know, judging from comments and questions posted in online discussion groups.<\/em><\/p>\n

The answer: St. Patrick\u2019s Day celebrates a historical figure \u201cand does not highlight the immutable characteristics of one group at the exclusion of others,\u201d an Air Force spokeswoman said.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cCelebrating this holiday appropriately may serve to build camaraderie and esprit de corps,\u201d she added.<\/em><\/p>\n

The distinction was not obvious to everyone.<\/em><\/p>\n

In\u00a0an Air Force-oriented Facebook forum<\/a>, a user posted a bright-green digital poster touting the Travis AFB celebration, along with a comment:<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSo it\u2019s okay to celebrate St Patrick\u2019s day which is based on a culture but not other cultures \u2026 make it make sense \u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Another user replied, \u201cSt. Patrick\u2019s Day is a Christian holiday, not just a \u2018Proud to be Irish\u2019 holiday.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Still another user wrote: \u201cSort of wondering if this is allowed with the new rules. Or, if it is, it raises some questions about why certain cultural events are allowed and others aren\u2019t\u2026.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

When Hegseth lowered the boom on cultural awareness events, he suggested they were detrimental to morale and readiness.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cOur unity and purpose are instrumental to meeting the Department\u2019s warfighting mission. Efforts to divide the force \u2014 to put one group ahead of another \u2014 erode camaraderie and threaten mission execution,\u201d he said in the Jan. 31 directive.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cGoing forward, DoD Components and Military Departments will not use official resources, to include man-hours, to host celebrations or events related to cultural awareness months, including National African American\/Black History Month, Women\u2019s History Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Pride Month, National Hispanic Heritage Month, National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and National American Indian Heritage Month.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Hegseth continued: \u201cInstallations, units, and offices are encouraged to celebrate the valor and success of military heroes of all races, genders, and backgrounds as we restore our warrior culture and ethos. We are proud of our warriors and their history, but we will focus on the character of their service instead of their immutable characteristics.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The prohibition against cultural awareness events was part of a broader Trump administration offensive against racial preferences and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.<\/em><\/p>\n

The administration shut down DEI offices throughout the federal government, fired their employees, and canceled DEI-related contracts and trainings. Military commands were ordered to scrub articles and images that showcased diversity from their websites and social media pages.<\/em><\/p>\n
