Since <strong>corn syrup<\/strong> is derived from corn\u2014a grain not considered Kosher for Passover under Ashkenazi tradition\u2014it\u2019s off-limits. To accommodate observant Jewish consumers, <strong>Coca-Cola<\/strong> and <strong>Pepsi<\/strong> revert to their <strong>pre-1980s formula<\/strong>, using real sugar instead of HFCS.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-blast-from-the-past-when-soda-had-sugar\"><strong>A Blast from the Past: When Soda Had Sugar<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you grew up before the 1990s, you probably remember when all sodas were made with sugar. The shift to <strong>high-fructose corn syrup<\/strong> started in the early \u201980s when sugar prices skyrocketed, and corn (<em>heavily subsidized in the U.S.<\/em>) became a cheaper alternative. While the swap may have saved companies millions, many soda fans swear that the taste of cola changed forever.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-real-sugar-cola-resurgence\"><strong>The Real Sugar Cola Resurgence<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Over the past decade, demand for <strong>sugar-based sodas<\/strong> has surged, leading to a revival of classic flavors. Mexican <strong>Coca-Cola<\/strong> (<strong>\u201cMexiCoke\u201d<\/strong>), which never switched to HFCS, has become a cult favorite, with many swearing it tastes better and has a smoother finish. At some point, though, my taste buds had a revelation, and I jumped ship to <strong>Coca-Cola<\/strong>. With the return of sugar-based sodas, I find myself torn\u2014do I go back to my Pepsi roots or stick with Coke? The great cola wars continue, and I\u2019m here for the chaos.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-to-find-kosher-for-passover-coke-and-pepsi\"><strong>Where to Find Kosher for Passover Coke and Pepsi<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Passover Coke<\/strong> and <strong>Pepsi<\/strong> hit shelves <strong>a few weeks before Passover<\/strong> (<em>which falls in March or April, depending on the year<\/em>). They\u2019re usually available at major supermarkets with a Kosher section\u2014think <strong>Publix<\/strong>, <strong>Winn-Dixie<\/strong>, <strong>Whole Foods<\/strong>, and some <strong>Walmarts<\/strong>\u2014especially in cities with large Jewish populations like <strong>Miami, New York, and Los Angeles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve never tried a real sugar soda, <strong>now\u2019s the time<\/strong>. Stock up while you can because once <strong>Passover<\/strong> ends, the yellow-capped bottles vanish, and it\u2019s back to the corn syrup world we live in.<\/p>\n<p>Are you team Coke or team Pepsi?
