{"id":140105,"date":"2025-03-17T17:57:43","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T17:57:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/apple-2\/big-tech-is-now-slightly-less-silent-on-trumps-tariffs\/"},"modified":"2025-03-17T17:57:43","modified_gmt":"2025-03-17T17:57:43","slug":"big-tech-is-now-slightly-less-silent-on-trumps-tariffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=140105","title":{"rendered":"Big Tech is now slightly less silent on Trump\u2019s tariffs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs on goods imported from Mexico, Canada, and China are in effect, but Big Tech companies have remained mostly silent despite the potential impact tariffs could have on their businesses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">I\u2019ve written about this twice already: once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/605267\/trump-tariffs-apple-google-microsoft-meta-nvidia-samsung\">shortly after<\/a> Trump announced them in February, and again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/609494\/trump-tariffs-big-tech-silent-automakers\">a week later<\/a> after the initial 10 percent tariff on China went into effect and the Mexico and Canada tariffs had been paused. In both articles, <em>The Verge<\/em> reached out to many companies in Big Tech and adjacent industries, and the vast majority of them declined to comment or didn\u2019t reply at all. The ones that did reply usually gave generic statements.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">We\u2019ve done another round of outreach, and while there are a few new comments, things are mostly the same. Here\u2019s what\u2019s new:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Otherwise, the situation is similar to the last time I wrote about it, with very minor changes:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">But as I wrote previously, the Trump administration is chaotic, so the nature of the tariffs could change at any moment. The Trump administration on Wednesday announced a one-month exemption on the automotive tariffs imposed on Canada and Mexico, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/05\/trump-auto-tariffs-pause-canada-mexico-00213949\">according to <em>Politico<\/em><\/a>. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/624219\/auto-draft\">signaled yesterday<\/a> that the administration could announce some sort of compromise on the Mexico and Canada tariffs as early as today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">We may not see the real lasting effects of these tariffs on tech companies until their next major product launches. Could the iPhone 17 have a higher price? Will you have to pay more for the next generation of Ray-Ban Meta glasses? We just don\u2019t know yet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\"><em><strong>Update, March 17th<\/strong>: Added expanded statement from Arm, which mentions tarriffs.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\"><em><strong>Update, March 14th<\/strong>: Added Arm statement.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\"><em><strong>Updates, March 6th<\/strong>: Added Framework statement.
