A few folks on Twitter this week decided to gain some retweet capital by trotting out the familiar, \u201cThese food bloggers and the interminable STORIES before the RECIPE, am I right?! Just gimme the ingredients already\u201d snark.<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of reasons this attitude is problematic: we spend countless hours creating recipes and can offer them to you for free precisely <em>because<\/em> our posts are long enough to include ads that pay our rent. These people are basically saying <em>scrolling<\/em> is too much payment in exchange for our labor. That\u2019s pretty offensive. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also written about other facets of this topic: about <a href=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/2012\/05\/28\/eggs-a-l%E2%80%99oignon-and-a-defense-of-food-bloggers\/\">food bloggers\u2019 appropriate place in food media<\/a>, and about <a href=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/2015\/06\/09\/hot-strawberry-cake-with-ice-cream\/\">how to decide if you should be using food blogs or recipe websites<\/a>. But today I\u2019m gonna make sure you understand why this critique is also misogynistic.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/photos\/butterscotchcake\/bc-4.jpg\" alt=\"Hot Butterscotch Pudding Poke Cake\" width=\"700\"\/><\/p>\n<p>First, here\u2019s what I\u2019m not saying: I\u2019m not saying it\u2019s sexist to not wanna scroll through a story. People can have preferences! And they can choose what to do about them! They can still use food blogs and be irrationally annoyed, or they can use recipe websites instead to satisfy those preferences like a reasonable person. Whatev.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s sexist is someone publicly announcing that they think a group of overwhelmingly female content creators should shut up, get in the kitchen, and make them some pie.<\/p>\n<p>To put it simply: someone not reading my words is perfectly fine. Someone asserting that <em>I should not speak<\/em> \u2014 when women are  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/speak\/speech\/prejudice\/women\/\">told they talk too much<\/a> and have their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.damemagazine.com\/2018\/08\/06\/policing-language-is-just-another-way-to-silence-women\/\">language policed disproportionately<\/a> \u2014 is not okay. To imply that it\u2019s not appropriate for me to receive payment for the significant labor I put into providing this free service for readers? Also not okay. <\/p>\n<p>Read my words or don\u2019t, but don\u2019t tell me I shouldn\u2019t write them, and frankly, don\u2019t even tell me that it\u2019s <em>my<\/em> job to make it easier for people not to read them (no, I\u2019m not adding a \u201cjump to recipe\u201d button on my blog. If that upsets people, I\u2019ll consider a \u201cgo jump in  a lake\u201d button.)<\/p>\n<p>I write about things that matter to me on a personal blog that people can choose to visit or not. I write about <a href=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/2012\/10\/05\/brown-butter-pumpkin-cake-cheesecake-with-salted-caramel\/\">body image<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/2017\/02\/19\/buckeye-peanut-butter-cookie-bars-changed-mind-series\/\">changing my mind about significant beliefs<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/2016\/10\/04\/maple-double-crumb-coffee-cake-and-the-big-list-of-systemic-racism-for-white-people\/\">systemic racism<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/2018\/06\/23\/peanut-butter-cake\/\">my queerness<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/2016\/06\/04\/sweet-biscuits-and-the-tale-of-two-christians\/\">trans rights and my faith<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/2019\/02\/04\/cheddar-chex-mix-saltine-toffee\/\">affirming queer kids<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/2017\/11\/29\/quick-easy-iced-lemon-cake\/\">the #MeToo movement<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/2013\/12\/05\/light-healthy-cabbage-soup-easy-cheese-toasts\/\">dealing with difficult emotions<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/2018\/02\/19\/milk-toast\/\">gun violence in schools<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/2015\/03\/02\/hot-blueberry-cake-with-vanilla-ice-cream\/\">my grandmother<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/2016\/10\/25\/pumpkin-bread-stuffed-with-chai-cheesecake\/\">my silence<\/a>. But even when I\u2019m just writing about <a href=\"http:\/\/willowbirdbaking.com\/2018\/10\/23\/maple-brown-sugar-biscuit-bombs\/\">my donut preferences<\/a>, I deserve to take up space here. This is my space. My voice belongs.<\/p>\n<p>Next time you see someone cashing in on laughs because of this particular snark, I hope you\u2019ll see how weird and inappropriate it is. They have a scrolly finger (and an X-clicky finger) just like everyone else, and they can use it without implying I shouldn\u2019t be talking. And the other side of this coin: many, many thanks to so many of you reading this who are the choir I\u2019m preaching to.
