This <em>is not easy<\/em>. There is no synergy between Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager which would let the latter understand anything about things like <em>sessions<\/em> or <em>landing pages<\/em> or <em>Bounce Rates<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>One thing we can reliably measure, however, is whether or not the visitor is a <strong>New User<\/strong> in Google Analytics. This is done by checking whether or not the Universal Analytics cookie <code>_ga<\/code> exists in the user\u2019s browser when they enter the site. When the user lands on the page, check if they have the <code>_ga<\/code> cookie in their browser. If not, then they\u2019re a \u201cNew User\u201d in Google Analytics. Once this check is made, you can do whatever you want with this information (with one caveat, see below).<\/p>\n<p>In any case, the first thing you need is a <strong>1st Party Cookie<\/strong> Variable, which checks for the existence of the <code>_ga<\/code> cookie:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 746 \/ 638;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/09\/cookie-_ga.jpg\" title=\"_ga cookie variable\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"638\" width=\"746\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/09\/cookie-_ga.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"_ga cookie variable\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This would return <em>undefined<\/em> if the cookie does not exist, so we can check against this in a Custom HTML Tag.<\/p>\n<p>The only thing to solve here is <em>when<\/em> to fire the Custom HTML Tag. Basically, you have two options. Either upon an event that takes place <strong>before<\/strong> the first Universal Analytics Tag on the page fires, or upon the same event which fires the first Universal Analytics Tag.<\/p>\n<p>If you make the Custom HTML Tag fire upon an event which happens <strong>after<\/strong> the Universal Analytics Tag is fired, it\u2019s possible that a <em>race condition<\/em> emerges, and the UA Tag has time to create the cookie before the check is made.<\/p>\n<p>Still following?<\/p>\n<p>The Custom HTML Tag could look like this:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-html\" data-lang=\"html\">script&gt;\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">if<\/span> (!{{Cookie - _ga}}) {\n    <span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer.push({\n      <span style=\"color:#a50\">'event'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'newUser'<\/span>,\n      <span style=\"color:#a50\">'ga_newUser'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'true'<\/span>\n    });\n  }\n<span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">script<\/span>&gt;<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>This Tag would push a <code>dataLayer<\/code> object which has an <code>event<\/code> and an arbitrary key (<code>ga_newUser<\/code> in the example). You can use these to fire some Tag or run some functions that you only want to run for Google Analytics \u201cNew Users\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"update\">UPDATE<\/h2>\n<p>As pointed out by both <strong>dusoft<\/strong> and <strong>Stephen Harris<\/strong> in the comments (thanks guys!), you can use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/understanding-tag-sequencing-in-google-tag-manager\/\">tag sequencing<\/a> to send user status information to the main Tag without having to build a clumsy event chain. You can follow the guide linked to in the previous sentence, and simply update GTM\u2019s data model with <code>google_tag_manager[{{Container ID}}].dataLayer.set('ga_newUser', 'true')<\/code> in the Custom HTML tag.<\/p>\n<p>This way the Custom HTML tag, being the setup tag of the sequence, updates the value of <code>ga_newUser<\/code> in GTM\u2019s data model, and it is then available to the main tag to use in a Data Layer Variable.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"caveats\">Caveats<\/h2>\n<p>So, there are some caveats here. First, it\u2019s most likely that your Universal Analytics Tag fires on the \u201cAll Pages\u201d Trigger. That\u2019s the most common setup. If you set the Custom HTML Tag to fire upon the All Pages Trigger as well, any information you push into <code>dataLayer<\/code> in the Custom HTML Tag will not be available to the Universal Analytics Tag. Google Tag Manager has a <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/tagmanager\/answer\/6089629\">fixed Data Layer for the duration of an event<\/a>, so any changes will not be available until the next Data Layer event.<\/p>\n<p>Also, it\u2019s possible that the user is a \u201cNew User\u201d even if they have the <code>_ga<\/code> in the browser. The cookie lifetime is 2 years, so it\u2019s entirely possible that the cookie exists due to an older installation or something. Also, the page can collect to a number of Universal Analytics trackers, each with different cookie configurations. The cookie name could be different, or the cookie domain could vary. In this case, just looking for <code>_ga<\/code> might not be robust enough to identify a New User.
