Spring is here! Let\u2019s let the good hops roll by looking at the data for one of the most popular styles in the entire country: hazy IPAs. <\/p>\n
New England-style IPAs (that smell juicy no matter what you call them<\/a>) rank as the most-checked-in style, with over nine million check-ins, in 2024. <\/p>\n Can you level up and guess which hazies rank the highest in the country \u2026 For. All. Time (or at least since the style catapulted to fame around eight years ago)?<\/p>\n Give it a go. Read it, but for the CliffsNotes, here:<\/p>\n Breweries like Tree House, The Alchemist, and Trillium that first started brewing hazy beer intentionally wanted the light to bounce off these beers, brewing up consistently opaque IPAs that are now among the top-selling styles in the U.S.<\/p>\n Over time, as peoples\u2019 palates came around to the distinctly juicy, fruity, and uber-delicious notes of a hazy IPA, innovation ensued.<\/p>\n New England-style IPA, a direct coast-to-coast contrast to West Coast IPA<\/a>, morphed into the more descriptive hazy IPA.<\/p>\n From there, we\u2019ve heard a hazy called almost everything\u2014turbid, opaque, cloudy, hoppy ales, murky, foggy, blurry.<\/p>\n \u201cHazies made craft beer during that time period from 2015 to 2018,\u201d says Woven Water Co-Founder, Owner, and Brewer Jay Jones, who lays claim to a series the brewery calls \u201cBlurry IPAs.\u201d \u201cThey\u2019re definitely not going anywhere.\u201d <\/p>\n Humble Sea Co-Founder Frank Scott Krueger admits that the brewery\u2019s \u201cFoggy IPAs\u201d accounted for ninety-five percent of their production at one point. \u201cFoggy IPA is still our dominant style, but it\u2019s not just insane,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n At Pure Project, which makes \u201cMurky IPAs,\u201d Co-Founder and Brewer Winslow Sawyer agrees, noting that, for something like four years, Pure Project didn\u2019t even brew a West Coast; they only made Murky IPAs. <\/p>\n While both Humble Sea and Pure Project have started busting out West Coast IPAs again, hazies still dominate. <\/p>\n No matter what we call them, they\u2019re damn delicious, especially the ones that have reached all-time top-rated status on Untappd. <\/p>\n Editor\u2019s Note: These are not Hop Culture\u2019s personal ratings<\/strong>. For more information on our rating system, please view the Untappd ratings explainer<\/a>.<\/em> <\/p>\n Charlton, MA<\/em><\/p>\n Photography courtesy of Brew Cavern<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Here\u2019s a recipe for success: Take one of the best American IPAs in the country and a beer Tree House perfected over the years\u2014Green<\/a>\u2014and push it to the extreme. <\/p>\n Meaning more hops and haze. <\/p>\n Tree House calls this top-rated hazy IPA an \u201cunequivocal new favorite \u2026 featuring notes of pineapple, guava, dried jackfruit, tropical fruit, and citrus.\u201d <\/p>\n Despite carrying such a regal recognition, Gggreennn!<\/a> feels pretty humble. This New England-style IPA is the culmination of years of perfecting principles. As Tree House writes on its website, \u201cIt is a beer we are proud to share with you, and hopefully, it can serve to enhance a meaningful moment for you this summer.\u201d <\/p>\n Learn More<\/a><\/p>\n Canton, MA<\/em><\/p>\n Photography courtesy of Trillium Brewing<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Just as Trillium\u2019s Double Dry Hopped Congress Street<\/a> is a perfect expression of the top Australian hop<\/a>, Galaxy, Double Dry Hopped Melcher Street<\/a> makes Mosaic the star. <\/p>\n Slightly spicy, definitely piney, and fully resinous, DDH Melcher Street also \u201cbursts with nuances of tart citrus, tangerine, clementine, and subtle green onion,\u201d according to the beer\u2019s Untappd description. \u201cBold flavors of under-ripe melon, cantaloupe rind, and pineapple are highlighted with a gentle bitterness and delicate, biscuity malt character.\u201d <\/p>\n Are we surprised Trillium has one of the top-rated hazy IPAs of all time? Absolutely not. <\/p>\n But this beer is one of their classics and a great example of how if something ain\u2019t broke, don\u2019t fix it.<\/p>\n Learn More<\/a><\/p>\n Charlton, MA<\/em><\/p>\n Photography courtesy of Brew Cavern<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Almost like an alter ego of Alter Ego<\/a> (wow, that\u2019s a bit meta for us; it\u2019s just beer), Aaalterrr Ego<\/a> gets more hops in the kettle and a dry hop (just like Gggreennn! above). Tree House says that for Aaalterrr Ego, they adjust the base beer to help it stand up to the extra hop doses. <\/p>\n What you get is a hazy that\u2019s finessed and fruity, tantalizing and tropical, and pillowy and palate pleasing. <\/p>\n Tree House has fallen in love with this beer, and it\u2019s pretty apparent by its ranking in the top five on this list that many of you have, too. <\/p>\n Learn More<\/a><\/p>\n Canton, MA<\/em><\/p>\n Photography courtesy of Pint Please<\/p>\n<\/div>\n We\u2019re seeing a theme on this list\u2014Tree House and Trillium. Respect to the hazy IPA OGs paid in dues! <\/p>\n Although this beer is no longer in production, one of Trillium\u2019s experimental, small-batch offerings\u2014Permutation 38<\/a>\u2014earned a spot on this list for its intense tropical flavors\u2014mango, passion fruit, pineapple, tangerine, papaya, and even cantaloupe. <\/p>\n All those notes complement a pillowy body and hint of bitterness. <\/p>\n Yum!<\/p>\n Learn More<\/a><\/p>\n Brooklyn, NY<\/em><\/p>\n Image courtesy of Other Half Brewing Company<\/p>\n<\/div>\n This cloudy New England IPA catalog wouldn\u2019t be complete without Other Half, especially when paired with Trillium. <\/p>\n In Triple Citra Chroma Daydream<\/a>, you\u2019ll find oats, lactose, and a triple (yes, one, two, three) dry hop with Trillium\u2019s Citra hops and lupulin powder. <\/p>\n This beer focuses on all the goodies that make up our wildest hazy IPA daydreams. Thankfully, Other Half and Trillium made it a reality. One we can actually drink. <\/p>\n Learn More<\/a><\/p>\n Canton, MA<\/em><\/p>\n Photography courtesy of Trillium Brewing Company<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Trillium considers Double Dry Hopped Stillings Street an amplified version of the original with double the dose of Nelson Sauvin in the dry hop. <\/p>\n Hitting an incredible 4.35 average after almost 27.5k ratings on Untappd, this hazy hits all the right notes. \u201cHazy, pale orange in appearance with intensely aromatic qualities of kiwi, white grape, and lemongrass on the nose,\u201d according to the beer\u2019s Untappd page. \u201cDelicate flavors of citrus zest, pineapple, and cantaloupe are accentuated with crisp malt character, mild bitterness, and a soft, effervescent mouthfeel.\u201d<\/p>\n Learn More<\/a><\/p>\n Anaheim, CA<\/em><\/p>\n Photography courtesy of Mike P | Untappd<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Noble Ale Works, one of the hottest breweries in Southern California for the past decade, brews some fantastic IPAs\u2014Big Whig IPA and Tongue Tickles. <\/p>\n But on the hazy IPA side, 24K Juice!<\/a> rolls out the red carpet with flashing lights and bling, bling, bling. <\/p>\n Or as Noble Ale Works tells it, \u201cLet DJ Dank Juice, Citron, Am-I-Real-Yo, EL-D, and Chinook the Crook mob up to your palate with fistfuls of ripe citrus, stone fruit, and DAT DANK YO! It\u2019s just like Juice, and the Crew says, \u2018If it ain\u2019t hazy, you crazy! Infiltrator<\/a> grabs a spot on this list. And rightly so. <\/p>\n A base of both oats and wheat gives this hazy IPA that classic creamy body, but in a bit of a twist, Root + Branch Head Brewer and Co-Owner Anthony Sorice<\/a> throws in all New Zealand-grown hops from Freestyle Hops. <\/p>\nWait, How Many Names Are There for Hazies?<\/h2>\n
