You can\u2019t copy a list from one property to another, the list is a wildcard match for domain names (so all subdomains are automatically excluded), and it\u2019s just about the clunkiest user interface we\u2019ve seen since ERP tools from the 1990s. A while ago, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/gtm-tips\/implement-referral-exclusions-via-gtm\/\">wrote of a solution<\/a> which lets you manage referral exclusions using <a href=\"https:\/\/tagmanager.google.com\">Google Tag Manager<\/a>, and it\u2019s still a neat trick, as it\u2019s way more flexible than said clunky UI.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s still an <em>a priori<\/em> setup. You need to <strong>know<\/strong> what referrals are coming in. Also, if you have hundreds of referrals that you want to exclude, it\u2019s still a headache. We\u2019re going to brutally exclude <strong>all<\/strong> referrals on the receipt page. No matter where you come from, you will not be counted as a referral, and thanks to Google Analytics\u2019 last non-direct source attribution, your pre-payment-gateway-session will stay intact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExclude all referrals? Regardless of where they come from?\u201d I hear you whisper in fear. Speculations about me finally losing my mind along with my hair are flying to and fro like suicidal swans.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m serious! Think of a scenario where a <em>referral<\/em> to your <em>receipt page<\/em> is significant. You\u2019re not going to be sending campaign traffic to that page. You\u2019re not going to want to see it in Google\u2019s search index. Unless you\u2019re the worst SEO manager in the world, you\u2019re not going to want to build links to that page. So we don\u2019t <em>care<\/em> about referrals to the receipt page. The hypothesis is that whenever someone lands on the receipt page, it\u2019s <em>always<\/em> as part of your checkout funnel.<\/p>\n<p>I know, <em>always<\/em> is not something you should articulate outside of singing Bon Jovi at the local karaoke bar. But in this case it\u2019s worth the risk. The only reason you might want to see referral data on the receipt page is to debug some issue with your checkout funnel. But, my friends, there are better tools than Google Analytics\u2019 session attribution to do that. If you\u2019re really concerned, you can always send the referrer as a Custom Dimension.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, to get things working, you need to do two things: create a <strong>Custom JavaScript Variable<\/strong> and modify the <strong>Tags<\/strong> which fire on the receipt page. Let\u2019s start with the first one.<\/p>\n<p>Create a new Custom JavaScript Variable, and name it <strong>{{JS &#8211; Null referrer on thank you page}}<\/strong> or whatever suits your fancy. Next, populate it with the following code:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\"><span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>() {\n  <span style=\"color:#00a\">return<\/span> {{Page Path}}.indexOf(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'\/thank-you-page\/'<\/span>) &gt; -<span style=\"color:#099\">1<\/span> ? <span style=\"color:#00a\">null<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#0aa\">document<\/span>.referrer;\n}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>I\u2019m aware that this is different than the code in the image above. I\u2019m dark, mysterious, and unpredictable that way! (Both work just fine).<\/p>\n<p>The key thing is to change the string in the <code>indexOf<\/code> method to match the path (or part of path) of your receipt page. It\u2019s case sensitive, so if you\u2019re one of the 3 people who think that URLs that are something else than all lowercase are cool, make sure you include the case in the check.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve created the Variable, head on over to your Universal Analytics Tags which fire on the receipt page. That\u2019s right, you\u2019ll need to edit <em>all<\/em> of them, because even a single Tag which gets through with incorrect referrer information will start a new session. In the Tag settings, browse down to <strong>Fields to Set<\/strong>, and add a new field with this setup:<\/p>\n<p>Field Name: <strong>referrer<\/strong><br \/>Value: <strong>{{JS &#8211; Null referrer on thank you page}}<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 818 \/ 268;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/11\/field-to-set.jpg\" title=\"Field to set page view tag\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"268\" width=\"818\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/11\/field-to-set.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Field to set page view tag\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>And now you\u2019re all set!
