\nToday, Cascade Brewing<\/a> announced the launch of a new line of canned beers. This marks a big change for Cascade as the brewery’s package of choice has been 750ml and more recently, 500ml bottles.<\/span><\/div>\n

\nDetails about Tropical Grasslands, the first beer in this new series are listed in the press release below. At Cascade’s pubs, these new cans will be priced at $20\/4-pack of 12 oz cans or $6\/single 12 oz can. <\/span><\/div>\n

\nI was curious to learn about how Cascade plans to offer this beer at a significantly lower price point.  Kevin Martin, Director of Brewery Operations shared some insights with me.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n

“In an effort to created a canned sour beer that is different from our standard sour line and with a lower price point, we made some changes to our process. We are brewing a new beer recipe with lower starting gravity around 8-11 Plato (our standard sours are typically 17-24 Plato), which gives us a greater yield per brew. We also limited the amount of sugars available for the sour bacteria to ferment, which essentially lessened the aging period by roughly 4-6 months. We are also opting to use ingredients that are less labor intensive than many of our other projects.  As a result of these changes, we\u2019ve been able to bring this beer to market at a lower price point than our standard line of Northwest Sour Ales.”<\/span><\/i>

\nKevin also pointed that this is not a kettle-soured (which can be produced relatively quickly) beer. <\/span>

\nPORTLAND, Ore. \u2013\u2013 Jan. 13, 2020<\/b> \u2013\u2013 Cascade Brewing, a pioneer of the sour beer renaissance, is releasing its first sour beer in a can. Tropical Grasslands is available in single 12 ounce cans <\/span>starting today at both Cascade Brewing pubs in Portland; four packs are available through very limited distribution in <\/span>California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho<\/span>. This beer will not be available on draft.<\/span><\/div>\n

\nTropical Grasslands is a Gose-style ale aged in oak barrels for up to 10 months then infused with fresh orange zest, fresh lemongrass, ground coriander and Oregon Coast sea salt (5% ABV).<\/span><\/div>\n

\n“Tropical Grasslands <\/span>is the first in a new series of canned sours that are designed to be crisp, easy-drinking sours with clean and complex flavors,\u201d explained Kevin Martin, director of brewery operations for Cascade Brewing. “With soft acidity and fresh flavors, this canned series will be a great gateway sour for those new to sour beer, and will also appeal to the sour beer connoisseur looking for a softer approach to the style.\u201d<\/div>\n
