For those driven to create, visibility quickly became an act of resistance against misrepresentation, marginalisation, and erasure. <\/p>\n<p>Thinking about questions like \u201chow do we find queer community?\u201d and \u201chow do we find our history?\u201d Zorian Clayton, Curator of Prints at London\u2019s Victoria and Albert Museum, delved into the collection to create <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thamesandhudson.com\/calling-the-shots-9780500480960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Calling the Shots: A Queer History of Photography<\/a> <\/em>(Thames &amp; Hudson). Taking the words of photographer Catherine Opie as its departure point \u2013 \u201cI will wave a rainbow flag proudly, but I am not a single identity\u201d \u2013 <em>Calling the Shots <\/em>is a nod to inclusivity in its many-splendored forms. <\/p>\n<p>Drawn from the monumental photography collection at the V&amp;A, the book features a wealth of works made by and about LGBTQIA+ communities worldwide. Organised across six thematic chapters (Icons, Staged, Body, Liberty, Making a Scene, and Beyond the Frame), <em>Calling the Shots <\/em>explores the intersections of photography,  identity, image making, and activism in the work of groundbreaking artists including  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/inside-the-final-years-of-robert-mapplethorpes-studio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robert Mapplethorpe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/zanele-muholi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zanele Muholi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/portraits-that-capture-three-decades-of-black-culture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Liz Johnson Artur<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/80s-90s-lgbtq-protests-photos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sunil Gupta<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/mariette-pathy-allen-breaking-boundaries-50-years-of-images-exhibition-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mariette Pathy  Allen<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/an-uplifting-portrait-of-gay-liberation-in-70s-new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leonard Fink<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For hundreds of years, queer history has been hidden in plain sight, its artists casting their gazes in a myriad of ways, encoded in our constructs of beauty, desire, status, and wealth.
