Do they matter?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Do awards even matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rex Bakery has won many, many awards since 2014 including 27 medals at the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbreadawards.com\/\">World Bread Awards<\/a>, Best Bread in Britain (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rexbakery.com\/product\/multiseed-with-honey\/\">Multiseed<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bucksfreepress.co.uk\/news\/14714893.its-official-rex-bakery-has-the-best-bread-money-can-buy-in-the-chilterns\/\">Best Bakery in the Chilterns<\/a> judged by the Chiltern Society, 2 stars in the <a href=\"https:\/\/greattasteawards.co.uk\/2015-winners\/?product_producer_name=rex+bakery&amp;category=&amp;rating=&amp;country=&amp;county=\">Great Taste awards<\/a> for Pan Galego.\u00a0 \u00a0We received the <strong>best level of recognition ever in the World Bread Awards 2019<\/strong>, and this has\u00a0made us reflect on the value of bakery awards generally.<\/p>\n<p>An artisan bakery has just\u00a0been awarded the Best Brilliant Business Independent in the progressive Hammersmith &amp; Fulham Council\u2019s neighbourhood contest, and it only opened its doors in July.\u00a0 On a grey &amp; rainy November afternoon, their shop was buzzing with customers including the local MP taking a coffee break from electioneering.\u00a0 However, like most small businesses, it will undoubtedly be a very long time before it is generating the cash flow that the business plan &amp; site investments projected, so are the well displayed Award rosettes really bringing in enough new custom to make the difference?<\/p>\n<p>Entering any competition requires tremendous preparation &amp; planning; time &amp; care to execute the application; complete diversion of attention on the day itself; luck that everything goes perfectly in the final production; budget to invest in entrance fees &amp;\u00a0 product &amp; any transporting to the judging (and award-giving!) process.\u00a0 Rex Bakery has to sell a lot of baguettes to fund a competition entry.<\/p>\n<p>Yet here at Rex Bakery we feel very strongly that\u00a0taking part\u00a0in some Awards are\u00a0a Must-Do\u00a0every calendar year.\u00a0 Not all awards are equal.\u00a0 For instance, we don\u2019t much value popularity contests without a judging element\u00a0(although we were\u00a0chuffed\u00a0to win Best Bakery in Buckinghamshire <strong>twice<\/strong> thanks purely to lots of kind votes..)<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-65 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/rexbakery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/2019-Gold-Logo-169x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rexbakery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/2019-Gold-Logo-169x300.png 169w, https:\/\/rexbakery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/2019-Gold-Logo.png 361w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\"\/>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbreadawards.com\/\">World Bread Awards <\/a>is <strong>the\u00a0<\/strong>premier\u00a0awards for Artisan Bakers in Britain.\u00a0 \u00a0It\u2019s very focused on bread, as opposed to general baking, so there\u2019s no viennoiserie.\u00a0 There\u00a0are both Savoury and\u00a0Sweet \u201copen\u201d categories, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiptree.com\/\">Tiptree<\/a> showstopper as a nod to the Sponsors \u2013 but\u00a0of the 15 categories that\u00a0Rex Bakery could enter,\u00a080% are for bread.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Every September we submit to several categories and must deliver our entries to Westminster Cathedral where tens\u00a0of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbreadawards.com\/judges\/\">expert judges<\/a> are waiting to assess hundreds of loaves submitted from across Britain and beyond. The judges are all food professionals, mainly senior bakery professionals, who are looking\u00a0the entries\u00a0in a very technical way.\u00a0 In 2019 the judges included the legendary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poilane.com\/en\/maison-poilane\/\">Apoll<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poilane.com\/en\/maison-poilane\/\">onia Poil\u00e2ne\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0whose family has run the Maison Poil\u00e2ne in France since the 1930s and who specialises in a slowly-made 2kg Pain Poil\u00e2ne\u00a0sourdough boule.\u00a0 Of course it was essential that Rex Bakery, sourdough specialists ourselves,\u00a0always enter this judged category although competition is particularly fierce in this.\u00a0 Rex Sourdough was one of only 4 loaves to get a gold from Poil\u00e2ne\u2019s judgement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-47813 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/rexbakery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/glenn-making-sourdough-1024x736-1-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\"\/>Every loaf in Rex Bakery is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainweb.org\/realbread\/what_is_real_bread\/\">#RealBread<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Real Bread is defined to have been made\u00a0<strong>without the use of so-called processing aids or\u00a0<em>any<\/em>\u00a0other additives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The only ingredients required are additive-free flour, water, leaven, salt.\u00a0 This is important, because many competitors will have entered loaves with\u00a0chemical nasties in the flour which speed up &amp; cheat the bread-making process.\u00a0 Rex Bakery wants to be amongst the best bakeries in Britain,\u00a0 making the healthiest-possible bread, so would never countenance using non-organic flour with industrial \u201cimprovers\u201d.\u00a0 The only extra additives that Real Bread needs are Time and Skill.\u00a0 \u00a0 This means we are especially proud of Chiltern Society judging us the Best Real Bread Bakery in the Chilterns, as that is based on tasting the produce \u00a0and our approach of long fermentation for health and taste.<\/p>\n<p>Our recipe-for-quality has worked\u00a0because we have been 3x Category Winners in the World Bread Awards including for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rexbakery.com\/product\/plain-ciabatta\/\">Ciabatta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rexbakery.com\/who-else-wants-to-know-the-secret-of-rex-product-development\/\">Malt Loaf<\/a> and won 27 medals overall \u2013 this achievement confirms that we are in the top tier of bakeries in the entire country.\u00a0 \u00a0In 2019, we received the most accolades of any year since Rex Bakery was started 6 years ago:<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><b class=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Rex <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rexbakery.com\/product\/rexsourdough\/\">Sourdough <\/a>\u2013 Gold Medal ( white sourdough)<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><b class=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rexbakery.com\/product\/pan-gallego\/\">Pan Galego<\/a> \/ Country Sourdough \u2013 Gold Medal ( brown sourdough)<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<p><b class=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Wholemeal Sourdough \u2013 Gold Medal\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b class=\"\">Apple &amp; Sesame S\/D \u2013 Silver Medal\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-47850 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/rexbakery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Rex-Sourdough-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"\/>Quite simply, the Rex Baker was blown away to get three of the very few Gold medals handed out for his main three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rexbakery.com\/product\/rexsourdough\/\">sourdoughs <\/a>which again are just organic flour, salt, water &amp; his sourdough starter.\u00a0 The competition is huge in Sourdoughs now, the wholemeal sourdough was one of only 4 gold medals in the Real Bread Campaign category and\u00a0he has now won golds for pretty much every bread made in Rex Bakery from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rexbakery.com\/product\/baguette\/\">Baguette<\/a>, Ciabatta, Malt Loaf, Tinned breads, sweet buns all the way through to a whole host of sourdoughs .<\/p>\n<p><strong>So are Awards worth entering<\/strong>?\u00a0 Expert-judged artisan bread contests certainly are to the Rex Bakery, who was new to the food industry (previously\u00a0working in an office in the City)\u00a0 and to whom it was important to put his head above the parapet and be judged versus the best in the land.\u00a0 \u00a0What about you \u2013 what do you think when you learn about our Awards?\u00a0 Does it make any difference to you?\u00a0 Please let us know in the comments\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do awards even matter?
