Now the correct placement for the JavaScript methods of the container snippet is, indeed, in <code\/>.)<\/p>\n<p>I want to address something I\u2019ve been confused about from the very first day since I started using <a href=\"https:\/\/tagmanager.google.com\/\">Google Tag Manager<\/a>. Why on earth would an asynchronously loading JavaScript library be recommended to place in the beginning of <code\/>, when the logical place to start loading dependencies is as early as possible in the document load process? Well, the main reason for this is that the GTM library makes modifications to the document object model of the page in such a way that <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/kb\/927917\">might cause conflicts<\/a> when using Internet Explorer 7 or older.<\/p>\n<p>Another reason is that the <code><iframe><\/iframe><\/code> within the <code><noscript\/><\/code> block is not valid HTML, which is a legitimate concern.<\/p>\n<p>The third reason, which isn\u2019t really a reason but rather an offshoot of the original Google Tag Manager recommendation, is that Google\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/35179?rd=1\">Search Console<\/a> verification requires that the container snippet be embedded in the beginning of <code\/>.<\/p>\n<p>In this post, I\u2019ll tackle these three \u201cissues\u201d and wrap up with a consolation note that yes, it\u2019s perfectly fine to add Google Tag Manager to the <code\/> of the document, and it might even be preferable to do so.<\/p>\n<p>                <span class=\"simmer\"><br \/>\n  <span class=\"close\">X<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n    <span class=\"fa fa-md fa-bell\"\/><br \/>\n    <strong>The Simmer Newsletter<\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Subscribe to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/newsletter\/\">Simmer newsletter<\/a> to get the latest news and content from Simo Ahava into your email inbox!\n  <\/p>\n<p>  <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tip-36-add-the-gtm-container-snippet-to-ltheadgt\">Tip 36: Add the GTM Container Snippet to <\/h2>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 960 \/ 540;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/12\/GTM-container-snippet-head.jpg\" title=\"Google Tag Manager container snippet in head\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"540\" width=\"960\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2015\/12\/GTM-container-snippet-head.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Google Tag Manager container snippet in head\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Now, the possible conflicts arising with <strong>Internet Explorer 7 and older<\/strong> are easy to dismiss. Just forget those users! Punish them for using an antiquated version of the web browser. Honestly, Internet Explorer 7 is being used by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3schools.com\/browsers\/browsers_explorer.asp\">0.1% of Internet users<\/a>, and that ratio is only going to go down. Do not weep for the lazy. Make them suffer in the hopes of inspiring them to upgrade or, preferably, change to some other brand of web browser.<\/p>\n<p>Now, one thing you will have to do is remove the <code><iframe><\/iframe><\/code> element from the container snippet, since that\u2019s just not valid HTML. An <code><iframe><\/iframe><\/code> is <em>embedded content<\/em>, and in HTML5, embedded content is never allowed in the <code\/> of the document. However, you don\u2019t need to remove it entirely. There\u2019s nothing you can do about that. If you choose to move the container snippet to the <code\/> of the document, you will need to use some other means of validating your site.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-do-it\">Why do it?<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes you don\u2019t have an option. WordPress themes, for example, rarely have a hook for adding code to the beginning of <code\/>, and you\u2019ll need to hack around that by modifying the child templates. In these cases, adding the library to the <code\/> can save a lot of time and effort.<\/p>\n<p>Also, remember that Google Tag Manager is an asynchronously loading library. This means that it\u2019s loading as the page renders, and it\u2019s non-blocking. Thus, the earlier you start loading the library, the more chance your Tags will have to fire and complete before the user leaves the page or closes the browser. This might result in a slight increase in data collection accuracy and quality.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as the Search Console validator relaxes a little, I see little reason why you shouldn\u2019t always add the container snippet to the <code\/> of the page. In fact, if we ever get a synchronous version of the container (for running e.g. A\/B tests), adding the snippet to the <code\/> becomes a necessity.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(UPDATE 28 Sep 2016: The official recommendation has finally caught up with the times.
