{"id":136777,"date":"2025-03-16T06:32:39","date_gmt":"2025-03-16T06:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/activist\/johnstons-meats-barred-from-using-electric-prods-following-undercover-video\/"},"modified":"2025-03-16T06:32:39","modified_gmt":"2025-03-16T06:32:39","slug":"johnstons-meats-barred-from-using-electric-prods-following-undercover-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=136777","title":{"rendered":"Johnston\u2019s Meats Barred from Using Electric Prods Following Undercover Video"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>A provincially-licensed pig slaughterhouse in Chilliwack, British Columbia is being subject to enforcement action by the province, following shocking undercover footage showing horrifying and illegal cruelty animals.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2024, Animal Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/animaljustice.ca\/exposes\/the-truth-about-happy-meat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released<\/a> a gut-wrenching hidden-camera video from Johnston\u2019s Packers (also known as Johnston\u2019s Meats or Johnston\u2019s Pork), giving the first undercover look at pig slaughter in Canada. The footage shows pigs desperately trying to escape, being stunned improperly, cut open while still conscious, and the heartbreaking fear in their eyes as they see they\u2019re about to die.<\/p>\n<p>Following the video release and a legal complaint filed by Animal Justice, provincial authorities issued a prohibition notice, a warning letter, and identified concerns to Johnston\u2019s regarding the cruel treatment of pigs.<\/p>\n<p>In slaughterhouses, it\u2019s legally required that animals are stunned before being killed. But at Johnson\u2019s, workers regularly failed to render animals unconscious before slitting their throats and hanging them to bleed out.<\/p>\n<p>The BC Ministry of Agriculture ordered Johnston\u2019s to provide additional training to workers about proper stunning, and to reduce points where animals are crowding in the slaughter line, after Animal Justice lawyers identified a chaotic and haphazard kill floor, where pigs were seen running over the bodies of dead and dying pigs.<\/p>\n<p>The province has also issued a warning letter to Johnston\u2019s, as well as a prohibition notice under British Columbia\u2019s <em>Food Safety Act<\/em> regarding the use of electric prods and handling of animals at the slaughterhouse. No action was taken by authorities or the company until Animal Justice filed a complaint, despite pigs having their throats slit and being hung up to bleed out while still conscious, after failed stunning attempts, pigs placed in a scalding tank while potentially still alive and moving, and live pigs running over the bodies of dying pig in the slaughter line.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-impact-of-undercover-exposes-in-farms-amp-slaughterhouses\"><strong>Impact of Undercover Expos\u00e9s in Farms &amp; Slaughterhouses<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Even when inspectors are present, they consistently fail to protect animals from illegal abuse. This is why undercover expos\u00e9s are critical\u2014they are often the only way to expose unlawful suffering and violations of the provincial and federal laws designed to protect animals killed for food.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous undercover expos\u00e9s in Canada have led to charges and <a href=\"https:\/\/animaljustice.ca\/blog\/ontario-pig-farm-convicted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">convictions<\/a> for animal cruelty, and are an important tool to show the public how animals suffer immensely in <a href=\"https:\/\/animaljustice.ca\/issues\/farming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">farms<\/a> and slaughterhouses before their flesh is sold in grocery stores.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following the release of the footage, compassionate citizens in Vancouver <a href=\"https:\/\/animaljustice.ca\/blog\/vancouver-locals-protest-johnstons-pork\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">took to the streets<\/a> to protest Johnston\u2019s marketing of \u201chappy\u201d meat, highlighting the cruelty that occurs at their slaughterhouse.<\/p>\n<p>Transparency is the enemy of the meat industry, which thrives on secrecy and keeping suffering hidden from the eyes of the public.
