It began with horror, when on New Year\u2019s Day, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cdjg0r2p49xo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">terror attack<\/a> saw a man\u00a0drive a pickup truck into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street, killing 15 people and injuring a further\u00a057. February flipped the script, with the city\u2019s Caesars Superdome hosting Super Bowl LIX \u2013 and a Halftime Show performance for the ages by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/topic\/kendrick-lamar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kendrick Lamar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It set the stage for an edition of Mardi Gras pre-tinged with an underlying hum of anxiety, which was compounded by <a href=\"https:\/\/consent.yahoo.com\/v2\/collectConsent?sessionId=3_cc-session_23e14c69-6e9c-4f36-9af7-9fa1a9ebc756\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">early forecasts<\/a> of extreme winds and weather, which led to the rescheduling and early kick off for the parades.<\/p>\n<p>Dating right back to the birth of New Orleans\u2019 establishment at the turn of the 18th century, Mardi Gras (which translates to Fat Tuesday, traditionally kicking off the retrenchment of Lent) is commonly understood to be the world\u2019s largest free party, as well as the crowning jewel of the city\u2019s calendar. Over one million people attend each year, taking part in oddball traditions, such as the throws \u2013 where trinket gifts ranging from beads to shoes to children\u2019s toys, and even toilet plungers, are chucked at parades \u2013 while dressing up in outfits that range from the sublime to the bonkers.<\/p>\n<p>The January 1 terror attack saw a hugely increased, and far more visible, security presence at this year\u2019s Carnival. <em>The New York Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/04\/us\/politics\/mardi-gras-new-orleans.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> that round 600 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/video\/why-did-police-taser-a-bristol-grandfather-in-the-face\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">police<\/a> officers, or two-thirds of the city\u2019s force were assigned to the parades, along with an additional 100 plain clothes officers. In addition,\u00a0a strong army presence was brought in.<\/p>\n<p>Yet despite the pre-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/50-years-of-notting-hill-carnival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carnival<\/a> question marks, the day turned out to be a joyous celebration \u2013 floats moved without a hitch, attendees partied with jubilance, while a Tesla Cybertruck was <a href=\"https:\/\/consent.yahoo.com\/v2\/collectConsent?sessionId=3_cc-session_a4366a4e-bca4-44f8-831f-f8c6fddab034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forced to leave<\/a> the parade early after receiving boos, while being bombarded with beads and trash.<\/p>\n<p>Huck photographer Tom \u201cTBow\u201d Bowden was there to capture the Carnival carnage, and its colourful cast of attendees, in all of its vivid, joyous glory.
