Among so many cookie varieties out there, chocolate chip cookies stand out as a timeless classic. What is it that makes these cookies so iconic?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_9Y3C- AEhjf c9HmO _5aRph\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-8xnwqgs3w\"><span class=\"eEPyq\"><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"font-size:21px\"><span>The Origins of a Timeless Treat<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_9Y3C- AEhjf c9HmO _5aRph\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-6cxz38s9s\"><span class=\"eEPyq\"><span>Like all good legends, there are contradictions and colorful inconsistencies; the cookie was discovered by a happy accident, the &#8220;chipped&#8221; chocolate fell into the batter, the chocolate was intentionally added with the expectation that it would melt and create a chocolate cookie.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_9Y3C- AEhjf c9HmO _5aRph\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-xuhtd31401\"><span class=\"eEPyq\"><span>What is true is that chipped chocolate was fairly commonly being folded into baked goods in the early 1930s. It was Ruth Wakefield who made the eponymous American cookie famous, though, and it was not by accident. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_9Y3C- AEhjf c9HmO _5aRph\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-t7gwt23430\"><span class=\"eEPyq\"><span>Ruth was a formally educated dietician and chef. She and her husband owned the Toll House Inn in Whitman Massachusetts. The inn already had developed a reputation for its delicious baked goods and Ruth wanted to give her guests something different than her much-enjoyed butterscotch wafers. So she  added chipped chunks of a Nestle chocolate bar into her butter cookie dough. Their popularity at the inn grew and Ruth eventually published the recipe in her first cookbook, calling it  <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(59, 59, 59);background-color:rgb(255, 255, 255);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>\u201cToll House Chocolate Crunch Cookies.\u201d The originals were thin and crispy, unlike the gooey cookies we more often see today.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_9Y3C- AEhjf c9HmO _5aRph\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-9kbix39821\"><span class=\"eEPyq\"><span>According to the &#8220;Gastropod&#8221; podcast&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(59, 59, 59);background-color:rgb(255, 255, 255);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Cynthia Graber and Nicola Twilley,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div style=\"display:flex\" dir=\"ltr\" id=\"viewer-y96df40567\">\n<blockquote class=\"Dbpc4\"><p><span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"eEPyq\"><span>As the recipe spread, Nestle began seeing sales of their semi-sweet chocolate bar (which had to be manually chipped up into small pieces for the recipe \u2014 hence the name \u201cchocolate chips\u201d) skyrocket. They approached Wakefield, who gave them permission to print her recipe on the bar wrapper as part of a promotional push to accompany the fourth edition of her iconic cookbook, the cookie recipe now renamed as \u201cNestle Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies.\u201d Before too long, they also began manufacturing chocolate morsels, the little teardrop-shaped \u201cchips\u201d we all know and love. The chocolate chips, Wyman points out, is \u201dthe only highly successful food product that was made just for a specific recipe.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_9Y3C- AEhjf c9HmO _5aRph\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-0ds67yd75\"><span class=\"eEPyq\"><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"font-size:21px\"><span>Versatility in Taste and Texture<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_9Y3C- AEhjf c9HmO _5aRph\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-42xpiqo8r\"><span class=\"eEPyq\"><span>Another aspect that makes chocolate chip cookies a classic is their versatility.
