<\/a><\/div>\nI first became acquainted with Hadlow <\/b>in 1979 <\/b>when I
\nended up working in nearby Tonbridge. <\/b>I was living in Maidstone<\/b>
\nat the time and my journey to and from work took me along the A26<\/b>, and through
\nthe village. I remember counting four pubs as I passed through the settlement and
\nbeing interested in licensed premises and brewing took the opportunity, over
\nthe space of a couple of years, of trying them all. Five years later, in 1984,<\/b>
\nI moved to Tonbridge<\/b>, saving a commute of around 30 minutes<\/b> each way. <\/p>\n
Fast forward 46 years<\/b> and there is now just one pub <\/span><\/p>\n Another story claims the name change may have come \n It had been several years since I last set foot in the Rose \n I suppose Southampton<\/b> is a longish journey, and we\u2019ll be heading \n Being a Sunday<\/b>, we expected the pub to be crowded, and with \n The shop alas, is no more, after becoming a victim of the \n
\nremaining in Hadlow,<\/b> plus one to the south of the village. That pub is the Rose
\nRevived, <\/b>and it is situated just off the A26,<\/b> in Ashes Lane<\/b>, roughly
\nhalf a mile before you come to Hadlow Further Education College.<\/b> The
\npub\u2019s name came about back in the 1970’s, when <\/b><\/span>a previous landlord
\nbought what had been a rather run-down Charrington\u2019s<\/b> pub called the Rose &
\nCrown. <\/span><\/b>After spending a lot of time,
\nmoney and effort, he restored this lovely old inn, to something approaching its
\nformer glory \u2013 hence the Rose \u201cRevived.\u201d <\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n
\nabout because there was another pub, in the centre of Hadlow,<\/b> also called
\nthe Rose & Crown. <\/b>Whatever the case, the Rose Revived<\/a><\/b><\/u><\/span> is a
\nlovely old, building which is around 400 years <\/b>old, and for as long as I have
\nknown it, the pub has always sold a very acceptable pint of Harvey\u2019s. <\/b> <\/span>In recent years the pub has been considerably
\nenlarged and now incorporates a large reception-cum- dining room along with a
\nconservatory, at the rear of the building.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\nRevived,<\/b> but last Sunday<\/b> the opportunity arose to call in for a drink. This
\ncame about after visiting the nearby, BP<\/b> filling station, at Three Elm Lane. <\/b>What\u2019s
\nthe attraction of a petrol station, I hear you ask? Well, it\u2019s one of the few
\ngarages locally with an airline, and about the only one that still accepts
\ncoins. Motoring organisations claim that tyre pressures should be checked
\nweekly, but mine are lucky if they\u2019re checked quarterly, although I do tend to check
\nthem, if I\u2019ve got a lengthy journey coming up.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\ndown that way in just over a fortnight \u2013 more about that, another time. So, a
\nquick air injection into the two front tyres, (the rear ones were ok), and then
\noff to the Rose Revived. Matthew<\/b> was with me, and needed little persuasion to
\nstop for a pint, even though it was Pravha <\/b>that he was drinking. I forsook my
\nnormal Harvey\u2019s Best<\/b> in favour of a most enjoyable pint of Fox<\/b> from Exmoor Ales <\/b>\u2013 a brewery we
\nrarely see now, in this part of the country. There was a time when beers such
\nas Exmoor Gold, Stag<\/b> or Beast <\/b>were quite common in the south east, but for some
\nreason, this is no longer the case.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\nthe Rose Revived<\/b> a popular local dining spot, it was no surprise to discover
\ncar parking spaces were at a premium. We managed to squeeze in at one of the
\ntwo over-spill parks, and prior to walking along to the pub, stopped for a look
\nat the now sadly closed, Hadlow College Farm Shop.<\/b> Visits to the shop had provided
\na welcome break during the monotony of the Covid lockdown,<\/b> and as it was one of
\nthe few places with a regular and reliable supply of flour, during the early
\nstages of the pandemic, we made quite a few visits there.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\nfinancial crisis suffered by the group that was running Hadlow College.<\/b> This
\ncame about when the college expanded from its traditional Hadlow<\/b> base to take
\nover the running of both West Kent College<\/b> in Tonbridge<\/b> and Ashford College<\/b>. All
\nwere plunged
\ninto crisis in 2019 <\/a>,<\/b> when debts in Hadlow College <\/b>had reached \u00a340 million,<\/b>
\nwhile at WKAC<\/b> (the corporation managing West Kent <\/b>and Ashford <\/b>colleges) they were
\nin excess of \u00a3100 million! <\/b>The Department for Education <\/b>was forced to step in, resulting
\nwith the stricken colleges being taken over by other established, educational groups.<\/p>\n
