When Easter and Earth Day Coincide

""

Focus on sustainability

Easter is late this year, it’s date is determined as the first Sunday following the first full moon after the Spring Equinox* – which is usually around March 21st. This year it’s almost a month later than normal, celebrating on April 20, with Earth Day right on it’s heels on April 22.

While sustainability has been a consumer focus for some time now, this Easter the trend will be enhanced substantially by virtue of the calendar. If you’re a brand, shop, or a boutique in the lifestyle space, this offers a great opportunity to set yourself apart from others in your field through media pitches, company initiatives, social media, and in-store promos.

10 Ways For Your Brand to Promote Sustainability for Easter This Year

  1.

    Eco-Friendly Easter Eggs
Forget those plastic things and create social posts propped with Easter eggs and other delights decorated with natural dyes such as beet juice, turmeric, or spinach. This works for just about any type of brand.

  2.

    Reusable Baskets, Boxes, Packaging
If you currently package products sustainably, be sure to point it out on social media, blog posts, and on your website. You can also create a special set just for Easter presented in baskets or boxes that can be used year after year instead of disposable plastic ones.

  3.

    Sustainable Treats
Promote candy and chocolates that are organic, fair-trade, or packaged in biodegradable materials. This helps reduce plastic waste and supports responsible agriculture. If you have nothing to do with the food industry, team up with an brand that does to create posts for social media. And, as discussed last week – people always love seeing images of baked goods and treats – (and apparently also Jello).

  4.

    Plant-Based Celebrations
If you create or carry plant based cosmetics, candles, clothing, or decor, be sure to put an extra focus on this aspect of your brand and create images that reflect an Easter aesthetic (through props and infographs) to further highlight this element of your brand.

  5.

    Nature-Inspired Décor
Utilize natural elements for propping photo shoots, such as flowers, branches, or stones. Avoid single-use decorations and instead focus on items that can be composted or reused.

  6.

    Community Easter Events
Take part in or organize community events near and around your favorite retail partners that focus on sustainability. Perhaps an Easter egg hunt in a park, which promotes outdoor activities and reduces reliance on individual family events that may generate waste.

  7.

    Recycled Materials for Crafty Decor
Create Easter decorations for photo shoots using recycled materials for crafting Easter decorations or gifts. This can include natural branches found outdoors, cardboard, and fabric scraps.

  8.

    Responsible Easter Basket Goodies
If your brand has anything Easter basket sized that would work as an Earthy alternative – pitch them to media.

  9.

    Educate and Involve
Use this occasion to educate customers about the sustainability practices your company practices. Promote thrifting, circular consumerism, and reuse of your packaging and products if at all possible.

  10.

    Use a Softer Color Palette
Focus on natural colors found in nature, particularly this time of year.

A softer palette doesn’t need to be completely drab, here natural tulips are bursting with color alongside a natural basket that can be reused, chocolate eggs colored with natural dye, and a thrifted bunny who has been dressed in repurposed fabric and trimming.
