Tuberville cosponsors bill to secure one million Bitcoin for reserve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Senator Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., is among the lawmakers who cosponsored a bill Tuesday that would purchase one million Bitcoin for the U.S. government.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Boosting Innovation, Technology and Competitiveness through Optimized Investment, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lummis.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/BITCOINAct.pdf\">BITCOIN Act, <\/a>was reintroduced to the U.S. Senate by Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., on March 11. Lummis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/4912\">originally<\/a> filed the bill in July 2024.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rep. Nick Begich, R-Ark., has also filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/begich.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/congressman-nick-begich-and-senator-lummis-introduce-landmark-bitcoin-act\">companion version<\/a> of Lummis\u2019s bill in the U.S. House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The two versions of the act were announced by the lawmakers at a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/btcpolicyorg\/status\/1894401239518982286\">summit<\/a> held by the Bitcoin Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. Tuberville is among the act\u2019s cosponsors, alongside Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., Sen. Jim Justice, R-W.Va., Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., and Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCreating a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve is an important step in making sure the United States remains the strongest economy in the world. There\u2019s no reason why we shouldn\u2019t use Bitcoin to pay down our national debt,\u201d Tuberville <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuberville.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/tuberville-lummis-work-to-establish-strategic-bitcoin-reserve\/\">said<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cLike President Trump, Bitcoin has shaken up the status quo in Washington D.C. and is completely revolutionizing the way Americans invest in their futures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The bill comes after a March 6 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/03\/establishment-of-the-strategic-bitcoin-reserveand-united-states-digital-asset-stockpile\/\">executive order<\/a> signed by President Donald Trump, which called for the establishment of a \u201cStrategic Bitcoin Reserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trump\u2019s order, made a day ahead of a White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/03\/07\/nx-s1-5319049\/trump-crypto-summit\">summit<\/a> for crypto executives, called for the establishment of this reserve using cryptocurrency tokens already held by the U.S. government.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Billionaire and White House \u201ccrypto czar,\u201d David Sacks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ma9uf7LQVnc\">told<\/a> Bloomberg Technology this reserve would conduct an audit on and consolidate the federal government\u2019s current crypto assets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe reason why we need a Bitcoin reserve is that the federal government already owns some. In fact, it obtained around 400,000 Bitcoin over the past decade through criminal and civil forfeitures,\u201d Sacks said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lummis said she was proud to reintroduce legislation that would codify Trump\u2019s vision and expand the reserve\u2019s funds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBitcoin is not simply a technological opportunity, but a national imperative for America\u2019s continued financial leadership in the 21st century,\u201d Lummis said. \u201cBy transforming the president\u2019s visionary executive action into enduring law, we can ensure that our nation will harness the full potential of digital innovation to address our national debt while maintaining our competitive edge in the global economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The BITCOIN Act would establish a five-year Bitcoin Purchase Program to purchase 200,000 additional Bitcoin a year for the reserve. This would make up a total acquisition of one million Bitcoin, or what currently amounts to roughly $83 billion dollars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tuberville\u2019s office wrote that, if the BITCOIN Act is passed and the total sum proposed is acquired, the reserve\u2019s stake will make up roughly a five percent of total Bitcoin supply. This is a figure they say is roughly equivalent to the U.S.\u2019s gold reserves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tuberville has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuberville.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/tuberville-questions-cftc-chairman-on-taxation-of-cryptocurrency-and-the-need-for-a-regulatory-framework-for-cryptocurrency\/\">called for<\/a> an end to taxes paid for cryptocurrency mining.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement.
