This bread mix was tested with a Zojirushi BB-PAC20, the Home Bakery Virtuoso, at an altitude of 3,700 feet.\u00a0 Learn more about \u00a0the bread machines I own and recommend<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

I wondered what Sunflower Whole Wheat Bread Mix<\/a> would be like.\u00a0 I realized I was in for something special when I opened the package.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Sunflower\"Sunflower<\/p>\n

I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the bag and saw oatmeal and sunflower kernels.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

After looking at the ingredients, I understood why. The top four ingredients of this mix are: enriched whole wheat flour, whole wheat flour, sunflower kernels and rolled oats.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The bread was really good!\u00a0 The sunflower kernels added a nice bit of texture. Overall, the bread was soft and not dense.\u00a0 It was slightly sweet and hearty.<\/p>\n

The flavor was almost buttery without a \u201cwheaty\u201d taste.\u00a0 The Man of the House (TMOTH) is not a fan of whole wheat bread, but he really liked this!\u00a0<\/p>\n

What are Sunflower Kernels<\/h2>\n

\"Sunflower\"SunflowerSo what are sunflower kernels?\u00a0 That\u2019s the edible part of the sunflower seed.<\/p>\n

When sunflower seeds are shelled, what remains are the kernels. These kernels are rich in healthy fats, protein, fiber, and various vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E, magnesium, and selenium.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sunflower kernels have a mild, nutty flavor.<\/p>\n

Preparing Sunflower Whole Wheat Bread Mix<\/h2>\n

This mix is for a two-pound bread machine. <\/strong>\u00a0Use the basic cycle with the medium crust setting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Sunflower\"Sunflower<\/p>\n

While I used a bread machine for this mix, the package also has instructions for making it by hand and baking it in the oven. You could also use the dough cycle of your bread machine and then bake the bread in the oven<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The instructions on the package say to add water that\u2019s exactly eighty degrees. I use a Zojirushi bread machine<\/a>, which has a cycle that preheats the ingredients.\u00a0 In some machines this is called the preheat cycle, in others it\u2019s called the rest cycle.\u00a0 In any case, I just added room-temperature water.<\/p>\n

The mix called for butter.\u00a0 Again, because of the preheat or rest cycle, I simply cubed the butter and put a piece in each corner of the bread pan.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, if your bread machine doesn\u2019t have a cycle that preheats ingredients, you should follow the instructions on the package.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I added the ingredients as recommended by the instructions that came with my Zo, being careful to make a little nest for the yeast.<\/p>\n

Even with bread mixes, it\u2019s important to keep an eye on the dough after it begins to knead.<\/strong>\u00a0 After five or ten minutes of kneading, open the top of the bread machine and check the dough.\u00a0 It should be a smooth, round ball.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If the dough is too dry add liquid a teaspoon at a time until it looks right.\u00a0 If it looks too wet, add flour a tablespoon at a time until it looks good.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t need to add anything to this beauty!<\/p>\n
