Janice Hallett has such a unique writing style – all done through message boards and WhatsApp messages rather than straight prose – that you can’t help but be drawn in. Combined with the clever story, this is a great read. The Surf House was a more classic thriller – set in Morocco, it was high-energy and highly entertaining.

I had a non-fiction read in February too – The Peepshow has a grisly subject but it’s so well written, you will be engrossed. All about an unassuming serial killer in 1950s London, this book covers the case and trial plus gives a voice to the victims of the crime and has insightful commentary on the way the media reported it and society’s prejudice at the time.
