Perhaps you want to see what features are (not) being utilized, or perhaps you\u2019re just interested in knowing if people are actually using it.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, I\u2019ll show you how to configure <a href=\"https:\/\/tagmanager.google.com\/\">Google Tag Manager<\/a>, so that it works in the restricted sandbox of the Chrome Extension. You\u2019ll need to make some tweaks, but it\u2019s still perfectly doable.<\/p>\n<p>This article was inspired by Mike Pantoliano\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/108061194863325881998\/posts\/1nukTWxUNqB?iem=4&amp;gpawv=1&amp;hl=en-FI\">question<\/a> in the Google Tag Manager Google+ community. In other words, the extension needs to have actual HTML that the browser renders when you activate it.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-deploy-the-google-tag-manager-container\">1. Deploy the Google Tag Manager container<\/h3>\n<p>The first thing you\u2019ll need to do is create a new JavaScript file. You can do it with any text editor. Within the file, add the following code:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\">(<span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>(w,d,s,l,i){w[l]=w[l]||[];w[l].push({<span style=\"color:#a50\">'gtm.start'<\/span>:\n<span style=\"color:#00a\">new<\/span> <span style=\"color:#0aa\">Date<\/span>().getTime(),event:<span style=\"color:#a50\">'gtm.js'<\/span>});<span style=\"color:#00a\">var<\/span> f=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[<span style=\"color:#099\">0<\/span>],\nj=d.createElement(s),dl=l!=<span style=\"color:#a50\">'dataLayer'<\/span>?<span style=\"color:#a50\">'&amp;l='<\/span>+l:<span style=\"color:#a50\">''<\/span>;j.async=<span style=\"color:#00a\">true<\/span>;j.src=\n<span style=\"color:#a50\">'https:\/\/www.googletagmanager.com\/gtm.js?id='<\/span>+i+dl;f.parentNode.insertBefore(j,f);\n})(<span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>,<span style=\"color:#0aa\">document<\/span>,<span style=\"color:#a50\">'script'<\/span>,<span style=\"color:#a50\">'dataLayer'<\/span>,<span style=\"color:#a50\">'GTM-XXXXX'<\/span>);\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>You probably recognize this as the JavaScript part of the regular Google Tag Manager container snippet.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re using a separate JavaScript file to load the container library, because the use of inline JavaScript is <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.chrome.com\/extensions\/contentSecurityPolicy\">strongly discouraged in Chrome Extensions<\/a> (well, almost universally in fact).<\/p>\n<p>There are two things you\u2019ll need to modify in this script.<\/p>\n<p>First, you need to explicitly load the <em>gtm.js<\/em> library using the HTTPS protocol. You can see this change in the line that has <code>j.src=\"https:\/\/www.googletagmanager...\"<\/code>. So, the first thing to do is make sure you explicitly type <code>https:<\/code> in its rightful place, instead of the default relative protocol the snippet uses.<\/p>\n<p>The second thing you need to do is change the <code>GTM-XXXXX<\/code> to match the container you will be using. Regular GTM stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019re done, save the file as <strong>gtm.js<\/strong> and store it in the extension folder.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-load-the-file-in-your-pop-up-html\">2. Load the file in your pop-up HTML<\/h3>\n<p>Next, open the HTML file where your pop-up is loaded. Add the <strong>gtm.js<\/strong> file you just created as a reference, and place it in <code\/>. Why? Because it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/gtm-tips\/gtm-container-snippet-in-the-head\/\">doesn\u2019t make sense<\/a> to load asynchronous libraries anywhere else but in <code\/> especially since you don\u2019t need to worry about stuff like Search Console verification.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-html\" data-lang=\"html\">head&gt;\n ...\n script <span style=\"color:#1e90ff\">type<\/span>=<span style=\"color:#a50\">\"text\/javascript\"<\/span> <span style=\"color:#1e90ff\">src<\/span>=<span style=\"color:#a50\">\"popup.js\"<\/span>&gt;<span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">script<\/span>&gt;\n script <span style=\"color:#1e90ff\">type<\/span>=<span style=\"color:#a50\">\"text\/javascript\"<\/span> <span style=\"color:#1e90ff\">src<\/span>=<span style=\"color:#a50\">\"gtm.js\"<\/span>&gt;<span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">script<\/span>&gt;\n<span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">head<\/span>&gt;\nbody&gt;\n noscript&gt;\n iframe <span style=\"color:#1e90ff\">src<\/span>=<span style=\"color:#a50\">\"\/\/www.googletagmanager.com\/ns.html?id=GTM-W92WQQ\"<\/span> <span style=\"color:#1e90ff\">height<\/span>=<span style=\"color:#a50\">\"0\"<\/span> <span style=\"color:#1e90ff\">width<\/span>=<span style=\"color:#a50\">\"0\"<\/span> <span style=\"color:#1e90ff\">style<\/span>=<span style=\"color:#a50\">\"display:none;visibility:hidden\"<\/span>&gt;<span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">iframe<\/span>&gt;\n <span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">noscript<\/span>&gt;\n ...<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>If you really want, you can keep the <code><noscript\/><\/code> block which loads GTM for JavaScript-less users, but again I\u2019m struggling to figure out a use case where you\u2019d want to fire some pixels when people are using your Chrome Extension.<\/p>\n<p>This change in the markup simply executes the JavaScript in the file <strong>gtm.js<\/strong>, which means that when this HTML is rendered by the browser, the Google Tag Manager library is also loaded in the extension.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-modify-manifestjson\">3. Modify manifest.json<\/h3>\n<p>Next, you need to add a <strong>Content Security Policy<\/strong> to your extension\u2019s <em>manifest.json<\/em> file. Basically, you\u2019re telling the extension that requests to certain endpoints are OK, and the extension doesn\u2019t need to panic when those requests take place. A Chrome Extension has the potential to do all sorts of vile things, so this level of additional security is definitely warranted.<\/p>\n<p>In the CSP, you\u2019ll need to tell Chrome that requests to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google-analytics.com\">https:\/\/www.google-analytics.com<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.googletagmanager.com\">https:\/\/www.googletagmanager.com<\/a><\/strong> must be allowed. If you\u2019re firing any Tags to other endpoints, you need to list their hostnames here, too. Just remember that all communications must happen across HTTPS, or your extension will report an error when you try to upload it to your browser.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\">{\n <span style=\"color:#a50\">\"manifest_version\"<\/span>: <span style=\"color:#099\">2<\/span>,\n <span style=\"color:#a50\">\"name\"<\/span>: <span style=\"color:#a50\">\"...\"<\/span>,\n <span style=\"color:#a50\">\"version\"<\/span>: <span style=\"color:#a50\">\"...\"<\/span>,\n <span style=\"color:#a50\">\"content_security_policy\"<\/span>: <span style=\"color:#a50\">\"script-src 'self' https:\/\/www.google-analytics.com https:\/\/www.googletagmanager.com; object-src 'self'\"<\/span>,\n <span style=\"color:#a50\">\"description\"<\/span>: <span style=\"color:#a50\">\"...\"<\/span>,\n ...\n}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"4-modify-your-gtm-tags\">4. Modify your GTM Tags<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, you\u2019ll need to make some necessary modifications to your Google Tag Manager Tags.<\/p>\n<p>For every Google Analytics Tag firing in the container, you need to make the following change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Add <code>checkProtocolTask : false<\/code> to Fields to Set<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Scroll down to <strong>Fields to Set<\/strong>, and add a new field:<\/p>\n<p>Field Name: <strong>checkProtocolTask<\/strong><br \/>Value: <strong>false<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Normally, Google Analytics requires that the request to GA originate from either HTTP or HTTPS. If the requests originate from anywhere else, the process is cancelled. By setting the <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/analyticsjs\/tasks\">task<\/a> named <code>checkProtocolTask<\/code> to false, we can prevent this check from happening, since the extension uses the custom <code>chrome-extension:\/\/<\/code> protocol.<\/p>\n<p>Next, in your Page View Tags, make the following change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Add a custom <code>page<\/code> to Fields to Set<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Scroll down to <strong>Fields to Set<\/strong>, and add a new field:<\/p>\n<p>Field Name: <strong>page<\/strong><br \/>Value: <strong>\/some-custom-page-path\/<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because the extension page doesn\u2019t have a proper URL (at least in the typical sense), GA can\u2019t decrypt the Document Location parameter for the page path. Page path is a required dimension in all Google Analytics requests, so you\u2019ll need to manually add it to each Tag that fires.<\/p>\n<p>These two modifications need to be in place for tracking to work. For non-Google-Analytics Tags, you might have to make similar (or additional) modifications to enable them in Chrome Extensions.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s it!<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"summary\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p>I hope this guide was helpful to you! Understanding the full breadth of security that Chrome Extensions implement can be daunting, so perhaps this illuminates some of the peculiarities of working in such a sandboxed environment.<\/p>\n<p>By following these steps, you should be able to accumulate data in Google Analytics on how users interact with your extension. Remember, though, that the HTML is only rendered when the pop-up is clicked open, and each time the user clicks the pop-up open again, a new pageview is sent. So you can actually use Pageviews as a pretty reliable proxy for extension open rates!<\/p>\n<p>On an only slightly related note, it came to my mind that it\u2019s impossible to use a Chrome Extension like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghostery.com\/\">Ghostery<\/a> to block other extensions (due to the sandbox). So even if the user has blocked Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager from their browser, it wouldn\u2019t apply to the extension. This is something you might want to make clear in the privacy statement of your Chrome Extension!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you created a Chrome Extension, and now you\u2019re dying to find out how users are interacting with it?
