This piece highlighted another reason why allowing private companies to collect such information is concerning\u2014one of the major players in the field was hacked. Gravy Analytics, the parent company of Venntel, which sold smartphone location data to the US government, reportedly lost \u201ca massive amount of data, including customer lists, information on the broader industry, and even location data harvested from smartphones which show peoples\u2019 precise movements.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/12\/3\/24312313\/ftc-bans-sensitive-location-data-brokers-gravy-analytics-venntel-mobilewalla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">FTC later prohibiting both companies<\/a>\u00a0from collecting, using, and selling sensitive location data of Americans, all that data is reportedly now available for purchase. Among those compromised files was a list of over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/candy-crush-tinder-myfitnesspal-see-the-thousands-of-apps-hijacked-to-spy-on-your-location\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">12,000 iOS and Android apps<\/a>\u00a0that may have been\u2014and may still be\u2014exploited by data brokers to collect users\u2019 location data. These apps do not contain malicious code; instead, they are part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Real-time_bidding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">real-time bidding advertising ecosystem<\/a>. When advertisers bid to place ads within apps, all firms participating in the bidding\u2014including data brokers\u2014are granted access to information about your device, including its location data.<\/p>\n<p>Even browsing through a list of over 12,000 apps, many of which are for Android, feels overwhelming, let alone manually comparing all the apps on your iPhone to the master list. Fortunately, there is an automated way to determine which apps on our iPhones were involved, knowingly or not, in this location data collection scheme.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/apple-configurator\/id1037126344?mt=12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Apple Configurator<\/a> from the Mac App Store.<\/li>\n<li>Connect your iPhone to your Mac using a USB cable.<\/li>\n<li>If prompted, allow the iPhone to connect and install a driver update.<\/li>\n<li>Open Apple Configurator and select your iPhone.<\/li>\n<li>Choose <strong>Actions &gt; Export &gt; Info<\/strong>, select <strong>Device Information<\/strong>, and then select <strong>Installed Apps<\/strong>.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/tidbits.com\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Export-Installed-Apps.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-69817 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/tidbits.com\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Export-Installed-Apps.png\" alt=\"Export installed apps using Apple Configurator\" width=\"1284\" height=\"1458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tidbits.com\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Export-Installed-Apps.png 1284w, https:\/\/tidbits.com\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Export-Installed-Apps-1280x1453.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1284px) 100vw, 1284px\"\/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Apple Configurator then lets you save a three-column CSV file. I\u2019ll leave it as an exercise for the reader to delete the UDID and Seller columns and to remove the parenthetical version number after each app name. I used Modern CSV with a grep search to find and delete a string consisting of a space and any text in parentheses, but that could also be done in BBEdit or other apps. (Yes, I really do have 484 apps on my iPhone.)<a href=\"https:\/\/tidbits.com\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Modern-CSV-app-list.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-69819\" src=\"https:\/\/tidbits.com\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Modern-CSV-app-list.png\" alt=\"Editing app list in Modern CSV\" width=\"467\" height=\"500\"\/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Download this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tidbits.com\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Apps-from-Gravy-Analytics-breach.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">text file with all 12,325 apps<\/a>\u00a0identified in the data breach to spare you the effort of copying data from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1Ukgd0gIWd9gpV6bOx2pcSHsVO6yIUqbjnlM4ewjO6Cs\/edit?usp=sharing&amp;ref=404media.co\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">public Google Sheet shared by 404 Media<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Once you have the list of apps on your iPhone and the text file of all the apps in the Gravy Analytics breach, run this command in Terminal to identify the apps that appear in both. To customize it with your filenames, use the arrow keys and delete key to remove <code>file1.txt<\/code> and then drag one of the files in; repeat the navigation with the arrow keys and character deletion for <code>file2.txt<\/code> before dragging in the second file. Press Return when you\u2019re ready.\n<p><code>comm -12 <\/code><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>The results appear instantly. Only three of my 484 apps appear in the Gravy Analytics list: Citymapper, Tumblr, and Wattpad. I must have downloaded Citymapper long ago for some trip, I don\u2019t use the Tumblr app, and I don\u2019t even remember what Wattpad is. It was an easy decision to delete them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Given that I hadn\u2019t launched any of those apps in years, I don\u2019t think I was particularly vulnerable to having my location data sucked up as part of the real-time bidding process.
