{"id":129281,"date":"2025-03-12T21:50:12","date_gmt":"2025-03-12T21:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/finance\/intel-appoints-lip-bu-tan-as-chief-executive\/"},"modified":"2025-03-12T21:50:12","modified_gmt":"2025-03-12T21:50:12","slug":"intel-appoints-lip-bu-tan-as-chief-executive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=129281","title":{"rendered":"Intel appoints Lip-Bu Tan as chief executive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=8d6f15c1-6744-4f6c-b39e-ebd6868ad575\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Intel has appointed Lip-Bu Tan as its chief executive, ending a months-long search for a new leader after the troubled US chipmaker\u2019s board ousted Pat Gelsinger in December. <\/p>\n<p>Tan, former chief executive of chip design software company Cadence, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e3db542f-5e7f-4026-88d1-1d98be0b6c2e\" data-trackable=\"link\">quit Intel\u2019s board<\/a> in August last year in an apparent disagreement over the direction of the company under the then-CEO.<\/p>\n<p>He had long been considered a leading candidate to replace Gelsinger. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/7d63e57e-25d0-4925-bff7-6c35af845012\" data-trackable=\"link\">Intel<\/a> slipped into crisis last year, announcing thousands of lay-offs and pausing big manufacturing projects in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Tan said he had \u201ctremendous respect and admiration for this iconic company\u201d and saw \u201csignificant opportunities to remake our business in ways that serve our customers better and create value for our shareholders\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>In a separate letter to employees, Tan said he was \u201cnever deterred by challenges\u201d and that he was \u201cconfident we can turn our business around\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Intel shares rose more than 11 per cent in after-hours trading on Wednesday following the announcement. <\/p>\n<p>Chief financial officer David Zinsner and product business chief Michelle Johnston Holthaus had been serving as co-CEOs of Intel on an interim basis. Zinsner will retain the CFO role, with Johnston Holthaus continuing as product CEO.<\/p>\n<p>The pair have presided over a belt-tightening effort at Intel, which has been under way since August, while selling off assets deemed non-essential. They announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6e6fbdeb-cc8c-4f86-9a7b-f9906dfda1fb\" data-trackable=\"link\">spin-off<\/a> the company\u2019s venture capital arm earlier this year and have explored the sale <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ae9ea630-13e2-4427-921a-b0d9e764a7a6\" data-trackable=\"link\">of a majority stake<\/a> in its chipmaking unit Altera. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\" data-component=\"image-set\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/ftcms%3Af64191ac-c0a3-478f-a079-b6d2055288f6?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=700&amp;dpr=1 1x,https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/ftcms%3Af64191ac-c0a3-478f-a079-b6d2055288f6?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=700&amp;dpr=2 2x,https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/ftcms%3Af64191ac-c0a3-478f-a079-b6d2055288f6?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=700&amp;dpr=3 3x\" width=\"2274\" height=\"1516\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fd1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net%2Fproduction%2Ff64191ac-c0a3-478f-a079-b6d2055288f6.jpg?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=700&amp;dpr=1\" alt=\"Lip-Bu Tan\" data-image-type=\"image\" width=\"2274\" height=\"1516\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption\"><span>Lip-Bu Tan joined Intel\u2019s board in 2022 and was given special responsibilities to oversee the company\u2019s troubled foundry business<\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 Dibyangshu Sarkar\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Intel\u2019s chip manufacturing business has haemorrhaged billions of dollars as it spends heavily on new plants and struggles to regain its technological edge over competitor Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the chip design side of its business has failed to take advantage of booming demand for data centre chips that power artificial intelligence, with Nvidia and AMD establishing a clear lead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some investors have mooted a potential split of Intel\u2019s manufacturing and design businesses as a solution to its problems. <\/p>\n<p>But in his letter to employees, Tan said his aim was to build \u201cworld-class\u201d businesses in both foundry products.<\/p>\n<p>As the only US company theoretically capable of making leading-edge chips, Intel has been one of the main beneficiaries of a Biden-era subsidy programme aimed at building domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Trump administration officials have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/bec74539-098a-48dd-b0e6-7c33f9d5835e\" data-trackable=\"link\">recently explored<\/a> other options for Intel, including a potential tie-up with rival TSMC. <\/p>\n<p>A White House spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Intel board chair Frank Yeary said Tan was an \u201cexceptional leader whose technology industry expertise, deep relationships across the product and foundry ecosystems, and proven track record of creating shareholder value is exactly what Intel needs in its next CEO\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Tan led Cadence from 2009 to 2021 and is a well-known figure in the industry. <\/p>\n<p>He joined Intel\u2019s board in 2022, and was given special responsibilities to oversee the company\u2019s troubled foundry business, which ran at a $7bn loss in 2023. <\/p>\n<p>Tan is also a tech investor, as a founding partner of Walden Catalyst Ventures and chair of Walden International.<\/p>\n<p>Tan\u2019s appointment \u201cends the uncertainty\u201d surrounding Intel, said G Dan Hutcheson, vice-chair of consultancy TechInsights, adding that Tan was \u201cdecisive and realistic\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cdownside\u201d to his appointment, Hutcheson said, was his lack of experience in running an integrated semiconductor manufacturing company that both designs and builds chips. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
