{"id":128999,"date":"2025-03-12T18:52:15","date_gmt":"2025-03-12T18:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/advertising\/here-are-the-many-companies-pulling-their-ads-from-facebook\/"},"modified":"2025-03-12T18:52:15","modified_gmt":"2025-03-12T18:52:15","slug":"here-are-the-many-companies-pulling-their-ads-from-facebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=128999","title":{"rendered":"Here are the (many) companies pulling their ads from Facebook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sm.mashable.com\/mashable_in\/news\/h\/here-are-t\/here-are-the-many-companies-pulling-their-ads-from-facebook_jsuf.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"article\">\n<p>Facebook has been a platform with <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/facebook-internal-emails-cambridge-analytica\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">wobbly ethics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/facebook-hate-speech-ad-ban\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">questionable rules<\/a> for some time \u2014 and now it&#8217;s facing consequences where they hurt the social media network most. <\/p>\n<p>As many as 19 major companies have, at least temporarily, pulled their ads from Facebook. It&#8217;s a big loss for the tech behemoth, both in terms of dollars and reputation. Facebook has long been lax on policing hate speech, posts that incite violence, and misinformation. <\/p>\n<p>This was true even as recently as June 2020, when CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/zuckerberg-leaked-call-trump-dog-whistle\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">refused to do anything<\/a> about President Donald Trump&#8217;s Instagram post that warned: &#8220;When the looting starts, the shooting starts.&#8221; (Facebook owns Instagram, in case you didn&#8217;t know.)<\/p>\n<p>Over time, the public, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2020-06-01\/facebook-zuckerberg-trump\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">even some Facebook employees<\/a>, have grown fed up and upped their pressure the company. A group called Stop Hate for Profit took action and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stophateforprofit.org\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">organized<\/a> a push for advertisers to pull out for all of July. Feeling the heat, a whole mess of advertisers have since moved off the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook tried to walk back some of its policies on Friday, announcing new rules that <em>might <\/em>do something about problematic content \u2013 but they also leave lots of room for interpretation. As <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/facebook-label-violating-content-newsworthy-sometimes\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">Mashable&#8217;s Jack Morse wrote<\/a>: &#8220;Mark Zuckerberg has a bold new plan to occasionally do something about content that violates Facebook&#8217;s policies. Every now and then. When the company feels like it.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the advertisers continue to flee. Here&#8217;s a list of the major companies we&#8217;ve spotted thus far. <\/p>\n<h2>1. Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s<\/h2>\n<p>This feels like an obvious choice from the progressive ice cream maker. It said in a statement it would halt all paid advertising on Facebook starting July 1. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ben &amp; Jerry\u2019s stands with our friends at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naacp.org\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">NAACPOpens a new window<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/colorofchange.org\/stop-hate-for-profit\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">Color of ChangeOpens a new window<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">ADLOpens a new window<\/a>, and all those calling for Facebook to take stronger action to stop its platforms from being used to divide our nation, suppress voters, foment and fan the flames of racism and violence, and undermine our democracy,&#8221; it said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benjerry.com\/about-us\/media-center\/stop-hate-for-profit\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitterEmbed twitter-tweet\"><p>\n    <a class=\"text-gray-600\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/benandjerrys\/status\/1275538139235397633\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab) (opens in a new window)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n        This Tweet is currently unavailable. Unilever<\/h2>\n<p>The massive consumer goods company \u2014 and coincidentally, Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/benandjerrys\/status\/1276606219575328768?s=20\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">parent company<\/a> \u2014 announced it would not only pull all U.S. ads from Facebook, but Instagram and Twitter, as well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Continuing to advertise on these platforms at this time would not add value to people and society,&#8221; it said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unileverusa.com\/news\/news-and-features\/2020\/driving-a-responsible-digital-ecosystem-during-these-polarized-times.html\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitterEmbed twitter-tweet\"><p>\n    <a class=\"text-gray-600\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Unilever\/status\/1276557729092571137\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab) (opens in a new window)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n        This Tweet is currently unavailable. Verizon<\/h2>\n<p>The telecom giant announced it would stop all Facebook advertising. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our brand safety standards have not changed,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/verizon-stops-buying-facebook-ads\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">a Verizon spokesperson told Mashable on Thursday.<\/a> &#8220;We have strict content policies in place and have zero tolerance when they are breached, we take action. We&#8217;re pausing our advertising until Facebook can create an acceptable solution that makes us comfortable\u00a0and is consistent\u00a0with what we&#8217;ve done with YouTube and other partners.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>4. (commonly known as REI), jumped on the boycott not long after The North Face. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For 82 years, we have put people over profits,&#8221; it said in a tweet. &#8220;We&#8217;re pulling all Facebook\/Instagram advertising for the month of July.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitterEmbed twitter-tweet\"><p>\n    <a class=\"text-gray-600\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/REI\/status\/1274110350703554560\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab) (opens in a new window)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n        This Tweet is currently unavailable. Rakuten Viber <\/h2>\n<p>The messaging software company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/programmatic\/why-this-facebook-boycott-is-different\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">told AdWeek<\/a> it planned to indefinitely cut all spending with all Facebook properties. <\/p>\n<h2>10. Dashlane<\/h2>\n<p>The password management provider committed to pulling ads for at least all of July. Joy Howard, the company&#8217;s chief marketing officer, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.dashlane.com\/make-facebook-stop-hate\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">wrote a blog<\/a> calling out the effect advertising on Facebook has had on the world at large. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What\u2019s changed is that advertising is no longer about growing your customer base and building your business by bankrolling the free press,&#8221; Howard wrote. &#8220;We\u2019re no longer helping to pay the salaries of journalists documenting truth and editorialists making sense of the world. Instead we help fuel an engine of hate. The Coca-Cola Company<\/h2>\n<p>James Quincy, chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company, also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coca-colacompany.com\/media-center\/statement-on-social-media\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">released a statement<\/a> on Friday confirming the company&#8217;s commitment to &#8220;at least&#8221; a 30-day pause on Facebook ads.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is no place for racism in the world and there is no place for racism on social media. The Coca-Cola Company will pause paid advertising on all social media platforms globally for at least 30 days. We will take this time to reassess our advertising policies to determine whether revisions are needed. We also expect greater accountability and transparency from our social media partners.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>19. Patreon<\/h2>\n<p>Patreon has been showing support for the Black Lives Matter movement on social media and has hosted an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Patreon\/status\/1275954115600941057\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">&#8220;art as protest&#8221;<\/a> content series. Now they&#8217;re taking  a moral stance against Facebook&#8217;s policies by joining the ads boycott. That has the added benefit of boycotting the company that&#8217;s been trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/facebook-fan-subscriptions-patreon\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">rip off Patreon&#8217;s whole business model<\/a>, too. Affirm<\/h2>\n<p>A rising star in the financial tech space, Affirm has become ubiquitous on e-commerce sites offering interest-fee payments on retail purchases. As of Friday, became Facebook free, too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People come first,&#8221; the brand <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Affirm\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">tweeted<\/a>. &#8220;Affirm is proud to join the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StopHateForProfit?src=hashtag_click\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">#StopHateForProfit<\/a> campaign, standing against the spread of misinformation and hatred on social media. We will pull our paid advertising on Facebook and Instagram for the month of July to hold these platforms accountable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>26. Aspen Snowmass<\/h2>\n<p>A contender for the hoitiest-toitiest ski resort town in the country was an early signatory to the #StopHateForProfit boycott.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Aspen Skiing Company is using the next month to pause and stand with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NAACP\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">@NAACP<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ADL\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">@ADL<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StopHateForProfit?src=hashtag_click\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">#StopHateForProfit<\/a>, pending <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Facebook\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">@Facebook<\/a> addressing the spread of hatred, disinformation and fear on its platform,&#8221; the skiing company tweeted <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AspenSnowmass\/status\/1275559064202735617\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">June 23<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>27. Burton<\/h2>\n<p>If Facebook users won&#8217;t be served ads for hitting the slopes, they won&#8217;t be served ads for Burton sporting products, either. The StopHateForProfit campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stophateforprofit.org\/participating-businesses\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">reports<\/a> that snowboarding and apparel company Burton has signed on.<\/p>\n<h2>28. Chobani<\/h2>\n<p>The dairy company famous for its greek yogurt confirmed that it had signed on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Chobani\/status\/1277678892371922945\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">in a tweet<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Action over advertising. Today we join our friends at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ADL\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">@ADL<\/a> and a growing list of amazing groups like the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NAACP\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">@NAACP<\/a> to pause all our paid social advertising. We&#8217;ve always stood against hate &amp; bigotry and it is our duty to help change these platforms. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StopHateForProfit?src=hashtag_click\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">#StopHateForProfit<\/a>&#8220;<\/p>\n<h2>29. Denny&#8217;s<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/in.mashable.com\/article\/dennys-twitter-meme\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">social media powerhouse<\/a> that is Denny&#8217;s won&#8217;t be advertising on Facebook in July. Sorry, pancake lovers!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As America&#8217;s Diner, we offer an inclusive and welcoming environment where all people can enjoy a nice meal and we strongly oppose hate speech of any kind,&#8221; Denny&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/technology\/dennys-facebook-ad-boycott\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">told Fox Business<\/a> in a statement. &#8220;It is our belief that Facebook has not done enough to address this important issue on its platform and we are calling on Facebook to make positive changes to its process for combatting hate speech and disinformation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>30. Talkspace<\/h2>\n<p>The virtual therapy company has been listed as a boycott participant, and CEO Oren Frank shared news of the boycott on twitter with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/orenfrank\/status\/1276335957097287680\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">the tweet<\/a> &#8220;it is sad and unfortunate that only $$$ will eventually make <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Facebook\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">@Facebook<\/a> do the right thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to participating in the boycott, on June 1, TalkSpace announced that it was canceling a planned partnership with Facebook out of moral concerns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will not support a platform that incites violence, racism, and lies. #BlackLivesMatter&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>31. The Hershey Company<\/h2>\n<p>The iconic candy company with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LV9DL931WJM\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">memorable ads<\/a> of its Kisses joined the boycott Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a company, we stand for the values of togetherness and inclusion and we are resolute in our commitment to make a difference and be part of positive change,&#8221; Jill Baskin, The Hershey Co.\u2018s chief marketing officer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/hershey-is-the-latest-advertiser-to-boycott-facebook-in-stophateforprofit-2020-6\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">told Business Insider<\/a>. &#8220;We are hopeful that Facebook will take action and make it a safe space for our consumers to communicate and gather.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>32. Clorox<\/h2>\n<p>The cleaning products company is cleaning house. In a statement on Monday, Clorox <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecloroxcompany.com\/blog\/clorox-to-stop-advertising-on-facebook\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">joined the boycott<\/a>, saying &#8220;The Clorox Company will stop advertising spending with Facebook, Inc. through December.<\/p>\n<p>As a people-centered company committed to our values, we feel compelled to take action against hate speech, which we believe will increase through the balance of the year. This creates an increasingly unhealthy environment for people and our purpose-driven brands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>33. Ford<\/h2>\n<p>The iconic American car company is driving away from Facebook for the time being. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-ford-motor-social-media\/ford-pauses-u-s-social-media-advertising-calls-for-hate-speech-to-be-eradicated-from-content-idUSKBN2402NV\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">Reuters reports<\/a> that a Ford sportsperson said that hate speech on social media &#8220;needs to be eradicated&#8221; when it confirmed that it was joining the boycott Monday.<\/p>\n<h2>34. Best Buy<\/h2>\n<p>Another reason to buy electronics from Best Buy and not Amazon? Best Buy has taken a stand against hate speech on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We support what groups like the NAACP and ADL are trying to achieve, and our decision was made on that basis,\u201d a Best Buy spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/lifestyle\/best-buy-is-putting-a-ban-on-facebook-ads-for-its-apparent-failure-to-address-hate-speech\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">told FOX Business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>35. Microsoft<\/h2>\n<p>As first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/scoop-microsoft-has-been-pausing-spending-on-facebook-instagram-9fca2ee3-acd3-4b78-90c2-ed96846394e3.html\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">reported by Axios<\/a> Monday, Microsoft confirmed to Mashable that it had paused its ad spend on Facebook and Instagram. It&#8217;s not specifically partaking in the boycott. Instead, it&#8217;s concerned about its ads appearing next to hateful or otherwise inappropriate content.<\/p>\n<h2>37. Delta<\/h2>\n<p>The world&#8217;s second largest airline is taking a similar tack to Microsoft and pausing its Facebook ad buy. It hasn&#8217;t specified whether it&#8217;s part of the #StopHateForProfit campaign, but did put out the following statement:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Delta&#8217;s policy of zero tolerance towards racist, bigoted, or hateful acts or statements extends to our people, our customers, and the companies with which we do business.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>See a complete list of companies that have joined the boycott on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stophateforprofit.org\/participating-businesses\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">#StopHateForProfit campaign page<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h2>38. Whirlpool<\/h2>\n<p>Another company Facebook has touted as an <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/facebook-ad-boycott-delta\/\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">&#8220;advertiser success story&#8221;<\/a> is pausing its ads. Though not part of the official boycott, Whirlpool confirmed the stoppage to Mashable in a statement:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whirlpool Corporation has chosen not to invest in paid advertising on Facebook platforms this July. The decision was made across the Whirlpool Corporation portfolio of brands in North America. We continually audit our media platforms to ensure our content is respectful to all people and hold ourselves and our advertising partners accountable to a high standard in order we ensure no bias and promote equality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>39.
