Book #3<\/strong> of my 100-book challenge<\/strong><\/a> is done, and folks\u2026 this one hit hard. In the Heart of the Sea<\/em> by Nathaniel Philbrick isn\u2019t just a tale of survival\u2014it\u2019s a gut-wrenching look at human greed, the brutal whaling industry, and one very fed-up sperm whale who said, \u201cNot today, whalers.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now, I went into this book expecting an epic maritime adventure, maybe even some early Moby-Dick<\/em> vibes. Instead, I came out angry at humanity<\/strong>, sad for the whales, and wondering how we, as a species, have been actively ruining the planet for thousands<\/em> of years\u2014but with the industrial age, we just figured out how to do it faster<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"In<\/a><\/p>\n\n

The Story: A Quick (and Painful) Recap<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Essex<\/em> was a whaling ship from Nantucket, and in 1820<\/strong>, it set sail to do what whaling ships did best\u2014hunt whales, strip them of oil<\/a>, and keep the world\u2019s lamps burning. But the ocean had other plans.<\/p>\n

Somewhere in the Pacific, an enormous sperm whale<\/strong> (seriously, this thing was the Jason Bourne of the deep) rammed their ship twice<\/strong>, sending the crew into a nightmare scenario of starvation, madness, and, well\u2026 cannibalism.<\/p>\n

Yes. Cannibalism.<\/p>\n

The men drifted in tiny boats for months, and things got real dark, real fast<\/strong>. By the time they were rescued, most were dead, and the few who survived were forever haunted. It\u2019s one of the most harrowing maritime disasters in history\u2014and, fun fact, it inspired Herman Melville\u2019s Moby-Dick<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

But Let\u2019s Talk About the Whale for a Second<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

I know, I know. The book focuses on human<\/em> survival, but all I could think was: Good for that whale.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Imagine minding your own business in the ocean, only for some scruffy humans to show up and start harpooning your friends. What do you do?<\/p>\n

Full-body tackle their ship like an aquatic wrecking ball.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And honestly? I support it.<\/p>\n

Philbrick<\/a> does a fantastic job of painting the whaling industry as brutal, wasteful, and heartbreaking<\/strong>\u2014something we definitely<\/em> don\u2019t talk about enough. It wasn\u2019t just about oil; it was about human arrogance, thinking nature was ours to exploit.<\/p>\n

This book left me mourning for the whales<\/strong> and wondering: Did we really learn anything from history?<\/em> (Spoiler: Not much.)<\/p>\n

\"In<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

The Great Tortoise Tragedy: Slow, Steady, and\u2026 Sadly, Delicious?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

As if the whaling industry wasn\u2019t horrific enough<\/strong>, let\u2019s talk about what they did to the tortoises<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Picture this: You\u2019re a giant Gal\u00e1pagos tortoise<\/strong><\/a>, just living your best slow-moving life, munching on some vegetation, chilling in the sun. Then, out of nowhere, a bunch of scruffy, harpoon-wielding sailors scoop you up and toss you onto their ship.<\/p>\n

Why? Because apparently, tortoises were the perfect travel snack.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They could survive for months without food or water<\/strong>, making them the 19th-century equivalent of a canned good.
They tasted pretty great<\/strong> (according to whalers, who were clearly<\/em> monsters).
They could be flipped upside down and slowly starved<\/strong>\u2014which, if you ask me, is an absolutely evil<\/em> way to store your future dinner.<\/p>\n

For decades, whaling crews would stop at the Gal\u00e1pagos Islands<\/strong>, grab hundreds\u2014of tortoises, stack them like living luggage in the hull, and let them slowly waste away until they were needed for soup.<\/p>\n

Seriously. If you thought the story of the Essex<\/em> was depressing, just imagine an entire ship full of slowly starving, helpless tortoises rolling around like upside-down potatoes<\/strong> while sailors decided which one was dinner that night.<\/p>\n

And the worst part? They nearly wiped them out.<\/strong><\/p>\n

By the time people realized, \u201cHey, maybe we shouldn\u2019t eat all the tortoises,\u201d several species<\/a> were already gone or on the brink of extinction. (Cough cough,<\/em> Lonesome George.)<\/p>\n

So yeah, In the Heart of the Sea<\/em> wasn\u2019t just about hunting whales\u2014it was a grim reminder of how humans have a long history of treating the natural world like an all-you-can-eat buffet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At this point, I was 100% team whale. And team tortoise. And team anything that didn\u2019t eat everything in sight.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

Visiting Nantucket? Check Out the Whaling Museum (And Let Someone Else Navigate for You)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

If you ever find yourself in Nantucket\u2014hopefully by choice and not because your ship was rammed by an angry whale<\/strong>\u2014make sure to visit the Whaling Museum<\/strong><\/a>. It\u2019s home to some eerie but fascinating artifacts from the Essex<\/em>, including:<\/p>\n

Relics from the doomed ship<\/strong> (No, not the whale\u2014he got away.)
\u26f5 Documents detailing the disaster<\/strong> (AKA, \u201cHow Not to Have a Good Time at Sea.\u201d)
Diaries from the survivors<\/strong> (Spoiler: They were not having a great time.)<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a sobering but essential stop for history buffs, maritime enthusiasts, and anyone who\u2019s ever read Moby-Dick<\/em> and thought, Wait, was this based on something real?<\/em><\/p>\n
